With a companion book to League of Legends, developer Riot Games wants to tell fans more about the background of the "Massive Online Battle Arena". The English-language version, which has been available for a long time, is now being followed by a localized version, which is published in Germany by the publishers Droemer-Knaur. Colorfully illustrated and richly substantiated with text, fans get an unexpectedly deep insight into the world of "Runeterra". The official companion book to League of Legends is already available in stores.
The book for the film, the documentation for the favorite series, the story behind the song - these and similar formats are part of the standard of the fan service. Such formats have long been established in the games sector as well: from compendium to spin-off novel to solution book, there are numerous literary works that revolve around a video game or a series of games. Finally, fans of the MOBA League of Legends can also access an official booklet and thus a lot of background information about the game.
League of Legends: Everything about the story, game world and characters
What the publishing giant Droemer-Knaur presents to fans with the official booklet for League of Legends can at least be described as comprehensive. On 255 pages there is tons of information about the story, game regions and of course characters, all of which is visually appealing. The look alone makes you want to look at the book at first: the hardcover with the chic blue cover is available for 24 euros, now also in German. The English version of the booklet had been available for a long time, fans will be pleased that the localization was successful.
"The Realms of Runeterra" is the subtitle of the official companion book to League of Legends, which of course means the game world. Ariel Lawrence, the "Head of Narrative" at developer Riot Games, makes it clear on the first page that the book is not exclusively aimed at fans: "For some of you, this may be the first encounter with the universe of League of Legends ' Lawrence writes in the introduction. You don't have to have played "LoL", the affectionate abbreviation, in order to be able to deal with the background.
And indeed: even as a completely MOBA loan, you can understand what's behind the setting - and simply be entertained by a good story. It cannot be taken for granted that there is such a detailed story behind a competitive video game that is heavily influenced by esports. The fact shows how seriously Riot Games takes its brand and how much attention to detail lies behind the rather simple game concept.
The book has it all: on almost every page, fans can expect tears of story and background information, accompanied by hand-drawn sketches of the unique places in the world as well as the characters and creatures that populate Runeterra. There is a lot to discover, including many details that fans of League of Legends in particular can relate to. The added value of the official booklet is high, the presentation easily worth the price of 24 euros. About 255 pages later, you actually think you can understand Runeterra better.
Runeterra information: Exciting stories included
Anyone who fears a sequence of screenshots and images can breathe a sigh of relief. The text portion of the companion book to League of Legends is high. The narrative elements are sometimes appealing. Instead of inconsequential scraps of information, the LoL book even contains short stories, some of which extend over 15 pages. The creators always made sure to prepare the content in comprehensible units of meaning and content sections.
Nevertheless: The illustrations are the secret stars of the companion volume, partly because they offer much more detailed graphics than the video game template. From "Bilgewater" to "Piltover and Zaun" there are anecdotes, sometimes with a cuddle factor - for example when the chick of a silverwing presents itself as not deadly and dangerous at all.
The booklet has nothing to do with the MOBA League of Legends. Buyers do not get tips, tricks and tactics or any other kind of game help at hand. You have to know that in order not to have false expectations. The booklet is actually just that: an illustrated volume of text that accompanies the game. However, the title manages that excellently. The outstanding artwork and the atmospheric details of the detailed game world - perhaps not necessarily expected with a MOBA - make it clear why this title is celebrating such great global success in the end. In the end, it doesn't seem to be the technical aspect alone that defines League of Legends.
When processing the book, the makers afford no blunders. The book is of high quality and well localized. The promised "expedition through eleven regions" can be found as well as "hundreds of illustrations". Great: Among them there are also artworks that have not been published anywhere else, which should appeal to fans in particular. There are also completely new stories that will also offer fans in particular a special incentive to buy.
Incidentally, the official accompanying book is aimed at players and interested parties of all ages: the stories are understandable, but not formulated in a flat manner. It's fun to read, entertaining, and a whole new perspective on the world of League of Legends. Completely hassle free, completely different from "in-game".
The companion book “League of Legends. The Realms of Runeterra" was published by Droemer-Knaur and costs 24 euros. The book is available in brick-and-mortar retail outlets and online.
