Construction toys are one of the major categories in the toy market and even dethroned board games and puzzles in 2025. For our little one A digression on the topic of kidultsI had the opportunity to build the 108467, the steam locomotive diorama on a viaduct from Modbrix/BlueBrixx. Here you can find our more detailed opinion on the building block set.

The Modbrix steam locomotive diorama on a viaduct is a set for ages 8 and up, contains 1692 pieces, and has a recommended retail price of €59,99 on the BlueBrixx website. No instructions are included with the set. These must be downloaded from the BlueBrixx website and printed if desired. In my opinion, this is a bit of a shame, but ultimately better, as the instructions will probably never be needed, and if they are, they can always be found online. The overall presentation was disappointing. The box was a simple cardboard box with only a printed band. However, the band itself was quite nicely designed. While the building materials were logically arranged, they weren't as neatly organized as, for example, LEGO sets. Furthermore, everything was packed in cheap plastic bags.

The build itself was outstanding. I've never had so much fun and excitement building a brick set as with this one (which is probably because I rarely build such sets). The brick quality is comparable to that of a Lego set, and the set has some very creative building features that constantly amazed me.

Simple but effective. Building the set was great fun and featured some impressive creative building techniques. Photo: Sven Karsten

It took me about 5 hours to assemble it on my own, but that was largely due to the frustrating search for the individual bricks. This didn't detract from the fun of building, though. I would say, however, that the set is right at the limit for 8-year-olds (the age group it's advertised for). If the children are very skilled at building with interlocking bricks, they might manage it; otherwise, I would suggest a slightly higher recommended age. Finding the right bricks and placing them in the correct positions could be quite challenging for children due to the not-so-detailed instructions and the poorly organized bags. However, as the number of pieces dwindled, finding them did become easier.

The set itself is purely for display. There are no play elements whatsoever, and it's clear that the set is designed for children. And wow, is the set beautiful! Even without a license, it's perfectly clear which world it's meant to depict. As a fan of the wizarding world, you'll recognize the scene with the Ford Regalia and the Hogwarts Express on the Glenfinnan Viaduct from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Of course, it includes a few small additional elements, like a little mountain cabin and a pickup truck, which aren't in the film, since it's not a licensed set.

The details on this set are outstanding. You place dozens of tiny flowers and trees, build a small cabin, and even inside the train, you construct small tables and chairs that aren't visible later. These kinds of details constantly amazed me during the build. And knowing that there are little tables and chairs inside the train, even if you can't see them, always brings a smile to my face. The mountain behind the cabin is actually made up of four identical rock formations, the kind you'd expect from Lego. But these rocks have been so richly detailed that you simply can't recognize them as identical anymore. All of this just blew me away. This is what Kidult is all about! This is how sets should be made: interesting to build, packed with detail, and ultimately, simply beautiful.

Conclusion

In summary, I can only say that I was thrilled with the Modbrix set. Yes, the beginning of the build was quite challenging. I missed having printed instructions and a better organization of the bags. But the building process itself was consistently enjoyable. And the finished product is especially fantastic. I'm happy to display the set as a decorative piece. As a kid-adult, I was completely satisfied! And for the price of €59,99, you definitely get your money's worth.
