Financing board games via Kickstarter is no longer a rarity, but a widespread method for teams of authors to put their game ideas into practice. It is no longer just independent game authors or hobby players who want to make a new board game concept a reality, but also seasoned development teams who use the financial power of the masses in their favor. More and more well-known brands that want to win the hearts of board players can be found among the successfully financed titles. From now on I will present you the three most interesting Kickstarter projects in the field of board and parlor games once a month. We start with the Kickstarter Report for May 2016.

This War of Mine: The Board Game

That we like a blast Plague Inc. I already expected in another Post mentioned. Now the board game implementation of This War of Mine another high profile title before release. The financing phase Kickstarter of This War of Mine runs for a full eight days, but with a funding status of currently 713%, the project has gone well beyond its set target. It was certainly clear to everyone involved that the idea of the Polish team Awaken Realms would have a good chance. The fact that the result is so clear, on the other hand, may have surprised one or the other of those involved. This War of Mine is not a completely unknown brand: the digital predecessor from 2014 flushed more than three and a half million dollars into the developer's coffers - before the release of the mobile versions, mind you. The game also won more than 100 national and international awards, including the German Computer Games Award 2015 in the categories "Best International Game" and "Best International New Game World". Awaken Realms wants to continue the success of one of the saddest computer games of recent years with the board game version of This War of Mine connect now. The basics are great, but what will make board games convince?

Kickstarter Report: May 2016

This War of Mine is a cooperative board game and is therefore very trendy. The game footage looks excellent and captures the mood of the PC template almost perfectly. The features are reminiscent of typical fantasy board games, which is clearly reflected in the weight of the game packaging. In addition to the game figures, countless tokens and more than 200 playing cards, the packaging includes, among other things, a 128-set script with more than 1000 adventures. That sounds like a lot of entertainment. The game board in particular is a feast for the eyes. You can tell the tabletop experts where their roots lie. Given the huge amount of financing, the stretch goals and special editions of the board game are also impressive. Maybe it will soon be the case that the best board games are over Kickstarter financed. In any case, you should definitely plan this board game as a new purchase.

League of the Ancient Defenders: The Board Game

League of the Ancient Defenders (short: LOAD) could the success of This War of Mine still surpass. With 17 days remaining and currently 697% financing, there is still plenty of room for improvement. The Load Board Game team has targeted $ 30.000, and they have earned over $ 200.000 so far.

So the backers seem to love the game idea. But what is LOAD?

League of The Ancient Defenders seems to be a relatively classic miniatures board game. The battle between the armies of Chaos and Atlantis rages on the battlefield and 2 to 6 players take on the roles of leaders. What's special is the characters who have special skills that need to be used strategically. The detailed unit models look as they should and can be painted as desired. Table top fans are treated to a real board game highlight, after all, doing your own coloring is a plus point that shouldn't be overlooked Star Wars Imperial Assault knew how to use it for himself. The published game and skill cards also look superbly illustrated. LOAD can definitely convince visually. The concept sounds exciting in a playful way: Apart from the fact that the enemy army has to be defeated, the players should destroy militarily important targets such as towers or supply points during the skirmish. In connection with the card capabilities, LOAD should feel like a mixture of a classic tabletop and a trading card game. By winter at the latest, we will know more, because the release of the fantasy board game with tabletop mechanics League of The Ancient Defenders is targeted for December 2016.

Ave Roma Premium Edition

Kickstarter Report: May 2016

In contrast, the backers of the board game end up in ancient Rome Ave Roma Premium Edition. As a fan of sandal films and historical mass battles spiced up using CGI, this board game is particularly interesting for me. And that it has already been successfully financed, it will also appear - if the gods do not interfere. With just under $ 40.000 in funding, it works Hail Roma in the midst of its competitors like a low-budget production, but the project status still corresponds to 208% with 10 days remaining. The strategic board game relies on a typical worker placement mechanism and should therefore appeal above all to board players for whom it is important to establish functioning economic systems on the board game table. The specialty of Hail Rome Premium Edition will affect the availability of labor. Although all players start with the same number of workers, this status only applies to the first round of the game. Then the worker types are selected according to their needs, so that not every player has the full contingent available at all times. The choice of the working class will therefore have a decisive effect on the course of the game and thus on one's own tactics; at least that sounds very exciting. The game material looks good and is reminiscent of current sandal board games. In addition to the game board, the content mainly consists of player boards, cards, coins and various tokens. Nothing really surprising, but that doesn't have to be the case with a board game like this. Appearance is not everything: Ave Roma Premium Edition will surely convince with the playful values. Over 650 supporters can't be wrong.
