The Vikings have landed - and how. As if Odin himself had his divine fingers in the game, the 4X board game with deck building trick, Northgard: Uncharted Lands, launched a furious Kickstarter. The board game, which is based on the Northgard video game by Shiro Games, has already been funded. Now the remaining days are about achieving stretch and community goals - as well as simply being successful in collecting cash.

The video game Northgard was released in early 207, at that time for Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC. The concept is loosely based on the mechanics behind scurry games like “The Settlers”, but in a setting from Nordic mythology. The reviews of the video game were already excellent, now Open Sesame Games wants to implement the template as a strategic board game in cooperation with Shiro Games. The financing takes place via the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform. The designers have set the round sum of 40.000 euros as the target for their campaign - and with the help of more than 1.000 fans, it has already exceeded it. There is now time until September 1st to increase the funding amount.

Northgard: Uncharted Lands is 4X and deck building with Vikings

The idea of Northgard: Uncharted Lands corresponds to that of a 4X strategy game. So fans slip into the roles of Viking clans - that dictates the setting - and explore the world to collect resources, fight opponents and help their civilization to achieve more fame and fortune. The game comes from the author Adrian Dinu, who already plays games like "Schreck und Weg!" or “Moai” has implemented.

Northgard: Uncharted Lands is aimed at two to five players; Open Sesame Games specifies the total playing time for a game to be 45 to 90 minutes. The game is essentially driven by a deck building mechanism: each player accesses his personal deck, which is expanded by an action card at the end of each turn. According to their strategy, fans adjust their cards as the game progresses. In this way, various game actions can be carried out, such as discovering new map areas, conquering areas or collecting resources with which buildings can then be bought. Typical Vikings: Of course there is also fighting.

A game runs over seven rounds in which, in the end, the goal is to have amassed the most fame. However, and this is one of the exciting tricks, it is possible to end a game beforehand: namely if a player manages to build three buildings in an enclosed area. Resources play an essential role at Northgard: Uncharted Lands. They are needed directly to erect buildings, but give players advantages in combat. In addition, there is a survival mechanism from the video game template: resources are needed to survive the winter.

Open Sesame Games calls for around 50 euros as a minimum amount for Northgard: Uncharted Lands, for which there is the “Warrior Edition Pledge” via Kickstarter, which includes the board game including all stretch goals. As always, you have to dig a little deeper into your pocket if you want everything that is available as game material at the start of Northgard: Uncharted Lands: this is called the “Warchief Collector Edition Pledge”, costs 70 euros and also includes the eponymous expansion which includes five more miniatures of clan leaders, additional cards and a modular player board. The extended edition seems to be almost mandatory in view of the content - this is also signaled by the first “backers”, most of whom resort to the more expensive versions.

Northgard: Uncharted Lands will be available in different languages, there will also be German localization. The 2021X Winkinger board game is due to be delivered in July 4. Here it goes to Campaign on Kickstarter.
