The Cyberpunk 2077 test will have to wait a little longer, at least for us. Even if the first PC reviews suggest a terrific video game, it doesn't run smoothly on consoles: Cyberpunk 2077 is currently not a visual highlight on our Xbox Series X test system either.
In our opinion, a fair rating would not be possible at the moment in view of the sheer unbelievable commitment of the developers. And then there is this feeling: Cyberpunk 2077 will probably actually be the expected masterpiece, which can already be guessed after a few hours of play. However, this would not be reflected in the rating at the moment.
Cyberpunk 2077 from CDPR: Still (not) a masterpiece
In May 2012 CD Projekt announced Red Cyberpunk 2077. Eight years have passed since then, and fans are finally holding the action RPG in their hands. The expectations were high and seem to have been met, at least for PC gamers with powerful gaming computers. A different picture is currently emerging on the consoles: blurred textures, pixelated mash and sometimes barely recognizable characters are annoyances that fans post their screenshots about on social media. In fact, Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't look nearly as impressive in places as it should, even on Microsoft's power console.
The entire CD Projekt Red family has sweated and struggled to bring Cyberpunk 2077 to the market this year after a few postponements. This commitment of the developers cannot be rewarded highly enough. For them, it is the heart project that fans have wished for for the action role-playing game with pen-and-paper roots. And that's exactly why we're postponing the Cyberpunk 2077 review for Xbox Series X indefinitely. How long? That depends on how quickly improvements are made.
We are sure that CD Projekt Red is working flat out to fix the issues in the game that the Day One patch did not already address. If you were to limit yourself to the idea, the concept, the characters, the soundtrack and the gameplay in the test for Cyberpunk 2077, the rating would probably point to the masterpiece expected by critics and fans. The dilemma: optics also play a central role, especially in a game that has already proven how good it can look on other platforms. We didn't want to publish a review on the basis of guesswork, so we will do without it for the time being. Is that indirectly the announcement of a good rating for the test on Xbox Series X? No.
The saying goes: there is no second chance for a first impression. This also applies to Cyberpunk 2077. One could argue that the role-playing game can be played through several times without any problems and thus experienced differently. Yes, but the core gameplay remains the same, story lines and details change, but overall you will encounter many well-known scenes. We'd rather perceive Cyberpunk 2077 from the start as the grandiose role-playing game that it probably really is.
And then there is that feeling again: Everything smells like a masterpiece, only you can't see it.
