Nintendo reveals the next new title for Nintendo Switch – and it's one that has been speculated about for a while: Paper Mario. In Paper Mario: The Origami King, players can expect a colorful game world full of strange characters - beautifully folded in paper style, of course. And so that fans don't have to wait too long for the new offshoot, Nintendo also announced the release date: The new Paprer Mario for Nintendo Switch will be released on July 17, 2020.
Mario fans can already experience new adventures with their favorite plumber in summer. To Harvest Moon: One World Nintendo is knocking out the next big new announcement: Paper Mario: The Origami King - including, of course, a new trailer that shows loads of quirky characters and beautiful scenes. The new offshoot relies entirely on the strengths of the series: There are non-stop fights and entertaining puzzles. And all in a recognizable paper style.
King Olly can't help it ...
Paper Mario: The Origami King appears - hardly surprisingly - exclusively for Nintendo Switch. The colorful adventure lets players go together with Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach on the origami festival in the Origami Kingdom. There is a good atmosphere everywhere, only Princess Peach is somehow wrong.
Why does the first trailer for Paper Mario: The Origami King reveal:
King Olly, the self-proclaimed ruler of the origami kingdom, has sinister plans: He wants to fold the whole world. Of course, only one person can prevent this, namely Mario. And so the iconic Nintendo hero faces another challenge.
And: Just when it looks like it couldn't get worse, King Olly captured Princess Peach's castle with a giant paper snake and moved it to the top of a remote mountain. But that's not all: Nintendo has even managed to turn Bowser's henchmen into folders and use them for his own purposes, explains Nintendo about the background story of the new Paper Mario.
As surprising as the announcement of The Origami King is, Paper Mario has a longer history as a video game series. As early as 2000, an offshoot for the Nintendo 64 appeared in Japan for the first time, and a year later also in North America and Europe.
It was the first "Mario RPG" released in Europe at the time. In Japan, on the other hand, it was the second attempt to transfer Mario into this genre, which was special to him. Four successors to Paper-Mario were then released, and with the new Nintendo Switch version, the brave plumber can now try his luck again as a paper hero.
Mario is not a cardboard hero
Thanks to Mario's abilities, players can at least throw something at the nasty Obermotz. To fold King Olly he uses a whole series of new maneuvers. One of them are the folding arms. With them, players can pull out, unfold, pluck or pluck all kinds of elements from the environment. They use them to solve puzzles and make surprising discoveries.
Nintendo announces that players should also meet old friends in the course of their adventure. These include King Olly's good-natured sister Olivia and a number of unusual comrades-in-arms. Bowser hasn't let King Olly fold him up either - and Mario can use any help.
Of course, there is also fighting in Paper Mario: The Origami King. Mario stands in the middle of a ring-shaped arena, while his opponents are on different squares of the ring. It is important for the players to cleverly arrange the ring segments in order to push opponents together into groups and to receive a damage bonus when attacking. This probably requires a certain amount of tactics and cleverness. As always, various core elements ensure playful variety: exploration, mini-games, puzzles and lots of humor.
Paper Mario: The Origami King will be released on July 17th Nintendo Switch. If you would like to load the game onto your console in advance, you can pre-order it from the Nintendo eShop.
