The 28th FedCon took place over Whitsun in the Maritim Hotel in Bonn. From June 7th to 10th, the hotel was transformed into an intergalactic adventure playground - and numerous visitors and fans flocked to the convention, which is all about science fiction, fantasy and mystery. Originally started as a pure Star Trek convention, FedCon attracts fans from completely different genres. And as it should be for real fans, many put on their disguises for their con visit.
It has to be the good intergalactic atmosphere that draws visitors from Germany and abroad to the Maritim Hotel in Bonn every year. FedCon has been taking place there again since 2016. The 28th edition of the convention also delighted young and old visitors - not least thanks to the organizational experience of the tried and tested team behind FedCon. Great costumes, lots of merchandise and of course stars and starlets from film and television: all of this was part of the program of the largest Star Trek and Sci-Fi event in Europe for four days.
When seasoned men become little boys again in the face of colorful toys, then at the latest it is clear: it's FedCon again. From Captain Kirk to Marty McFly, from Borg to Loki - at FedCon, costumed people from countless series and films are guests. In addition to the real celebrities, they are the real stars of the convention and an event like this one would be inconceivable without them.
Meet the stars and starlets
No convention without celebrities, that also applies to FedCon - and despite the joy of the fans, it is a point of criticism that is often discussed. This was no different at FedCon 28. Set up very Amazon-heavy (no wonder, the online company was one of the sponsors), the trailer presentations, which were reduced to content from the Internet giant, offered plenty of explosive material. In principle, well-known partners are useful and helpful for events, and this is no different for FedCon - after all, Amazon has a large number of interesting series and films on offer. Star Trek fans in particular should be happy that the new series "Star Trek: Picard" is running on the shopping giant's streaming service. Positive effects of the partnership can therefore be expected.
The fact that the next convention should be reduced to three days (instead of the previous four) caused much more discussion - with the ticket prices remaining the same. That would then correspond to an increase of noticeable 25 percent. It goes without saying that even die-hard fans get upset about it, especially since travel, accommodation and meals as well as autographs cause additional costs - not to mention the pocket money that should be spent in the merchandise area. One thing becomes clear: The image of the small backyard convention can no longer be felt, FedCon is tough business; but one that the organizers are passionate about.

If you're not afraid of the costs, FedCon is an event that will make fans' hearts beat faster. Stars and starlets willingly and openly chat on panels and give fans a look behind the not always glamorous scenes of film and series production. Shazad Latif, actor and favorite Klingon on the series Star Trek Discovery, talks about his professional life with constantly changing roles and how schnitzel is his favorite “Klingon dish”. The one out Star Wars Well-known actor Ken Leung slanders his musical appearance, but prefers to talk about his family life. Fans get a lot on offer at the lecture events - and because a lot of things at FedCon take place behind closed doors, you should take advantage of the opportunity to take part in the panels. Only then will the convention unfold its full potential. If you want, you can spend a few extra dollars to buy autographs and pictures with your favorite characters - including a conversation or two with the star of your choice. One of the absolute highlights was probably the appearance of the always friendly Anthony Daniels, the “golden boy”, who didn’t miss any of the Star Wars films when it came to acting. His wealth of experience is therefore great - and he lets the fans share it.
The supporting program was also coherent and atmospheric: interesting workshops, play opportunities, exhibitions and shopping offers - plus the obligatory talks with long-missed costume friends. The FedCon 28 was again what fans make of it. All of this isn't new, and maybe it doesn't have to be, after all, the supporting program is actually just the "trappings" for the interactions with the guest stars.
With all the understandable annoyance on the part of the fans about the future runtime-price problem: the FedCon 28 was again a special kind of fan event. No matter whether newcomer or veteran - everyone is accepted into the FedCon family. Even the Borg.
That's a big part of the "magic" of FedCon. Next year, FedCon 29 will take place from May 29th to 31st, 2020 at the Maritim Hotel in Bonn. Tickets for this are already available. Further information about the next FedCon is available from us or on the official website at www.fedcon.de.
