A miniatures board game is set to come onto the market for the Xbox-exclusive shooter series Halo. This was announced by the British publisher Mantic Games, which had previously published titles such as The Walking Dead: All Out War.
Halo has been one of Microsoft's driving forces for Xbox consoles since the initial release of Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001. The series began as a real-time strategy, but today it is essentially in the third-person shooter genre. With Halo: Infinite, the most recent of all Halo games was released in the series' 20th anniversary year.
The brand, originally developed by Bungie and now by 343 Industries, is now a media franchise with spin-offs as books or series - and also with spin-offs in the area of board games.
Mantic Games relies on large figures
Halo has become a hugely popular science fiction brand over the years, influencing modern pop culture while also capitalizing on other cultural influences. The Halo games were also extremely successful financially: the titles in the Halo series had been sold more than 2021 million times by 80, as Deadline magazine reported at the time about the TV series' move from Showtime to Paramount+.
According to Mantic Games, the Halo series will enter a new round in September 2024, then as a board game with miniatures. The publisher is working with 343 Industries to bring Halo onto the market as a tabletop. The publication is planned directly in regular stores, so there will be no crowdfunding for financing. “We’re excited to work with Mantic Games to bring fans a new Halo tabletop game in 2024,” said John Friend, Head of Halo and Xbox Consumer Product. About Mantic, Friend says the publisher is a leader in tabletop gaming. Halo gameplay would be carried over “in an incredibly authentic way” with the miniatures game.
Essentially, it will be about tactical firefights, so the makers are likely to have followed the template closely. Although not many details are known about the concept of the Halo miniatures game, from the statements made by publisher representatives so far it can be seen that at least a cover system is likely to be one of the core elements. This was also the case in the games in the shooter series. It will be a competitive board game. Mantic describes the tabletop game as a “team battle experience” that is aimed at both genre fans and beginners.
Mantic Games' attempts to adapt the Halo franchise as a miniatures game is not a first in the industry: Spartan Games had already released an offshoot with Halo: Ground Command in 2016, but it did not have a long lifespan in the tabletop game genre. There was also Halo: Fleet Battles before. Ultimately, Spartan Games closed in 2017.
According to Mantic Games, the first images of the material and possibly a more intensive look at the basic gameplay structure are expected in March 2024. Of the few known details, what is particularly interesting is the reference to the miniature size: With the 40 millimeter tall figures of the Spartans, the makers of the game surpass the models from the Warhammer franchise. Nothing is known about the prices either; information on this could also follow in the spring, as well as further details about products such as starter sets or individual figure packs.
