The games of Grand Theft Autoseries have often set standards. Many fans expect nothing less than that from GTA 6. Rockstar Games has already put itself in a good position with the protagonist duo to be able to provide great moments, at least in the story.
The games in the GTA series have always been more than just shooting action. It was the motivation and background stories of the characters that made Grand Theft Auto such special games: simply being a gangster is not enough. There is usually more to the broken or crazy characters that end up on the screen in GTA. This can already be seen in the first trailer for GTA 6: Lucie and - presumably Jason - are two main characters with whom Rockstar Games could tell great stories. However, the developers should show a little more courage than with GTA 5.
story from different perspectives
There is no doubt that expectations for the quality of Grand Theft Auto 6 are pretty high. This is especially true for the game's story, because the new entry in the popular series is also supposed to be a strong single-player experience, if you look at the wishes of the fans. This could succeed, because with Lucie and Jason the developers have created a good basis for telling twist-filled stories. This is made clear in sections of the trailer: It's about loyalty, survival, common goals, love. All of this can be expanded in several directions, possibly with the help of decision-making moments with which the players can influence the progression of the story. At least Rockstar Games should use this as a bold approach to make the background story of GTA 6 more than just a Bonnie and Clyde heist.
At the moment, everything seems to indicate that fans will not only slip into the role of Lucie, but will also play Jason. Similar to GTA 5, the story can then be told from multiple perspectives and ultimately linked at one or more points. But it shouldn't stop there, because Rockstar Games has the chance to really breathe new life into the genre and video game storytelling. This could succeed above all if they don't tell one big story about two characters, but two epic backstories that are very different from each other and are initially only loosely connected. GTA 5 made the problem clear: although there were narrative threads and different main characters, the entire story was told in a rather mechanical and very structured way along the big common denominator. With GTA 6, the developers should show more courage and not just let the narrative threads of both characters converge on each other.
The starting position as a couple in particular offers potential for a really big drama. It could be about betrayal, lies, but also reconciliation, about completely different paths in life that are united, but don't necessarily have to be. Above all, Rockstar Games should vary the pace of the two stories so that players are able to wait as an omniscient participant for moments in which the characters are actually surprised and you can also feel this surprise.
An even better approach would be to allow players to decide for themselves which of the characters they want to play first. This would also allow the story to be experienced from at least two different perspectives, because the decisions of one character would then have consequences that could be experienced from the perspective of the other character. However Rockstar Games ultimately deals with the duo Lucie and Jason, the opportunity presented should be used to not only make GTA 6 a gameplay hit, but also to bring new narrative approaches to the genre.
