Gerda: A Flame in Winter from publisher DON'T NOD and developer PortaPlay is now available Nintendo Switch and PC available. The narrative RPG-lite is set in a Danish village during the German occupation in World War II. Players take on the role of Gerda, a nurse who wants to free her husband from the clutches of the Gestapo and is confronted with numerous moral dilemmas as the story progresses.
In Denmark, during the German occupation of World War II, nurse Gerda has to face the fact that her life will never be the same again. She is forced to deal with the changes that the war is forcing upon her.
Nothing is typical
Gerda is not your typical heroine and this is not your typical war game. Destiny does not take its course at the front, but in the small village of Tinglev, where Gerda was born and grew up. The friendly nurse has no weapons and no army to help her, instead she must rely on herself and her knowledge of the village and its inhabitants to rescue her husband, who has been arrested by the Gestapo.
Gerda: A Flame in Winter is a deep narrative game inspired by real events and real civilians who did their best to resist oppression during the German occupation. Players are confronted with moral dilemmas as Gerda tries to navigate a world full of dangerous situations and tough decisions that has suddenly become a lot more complicated - while trying to stay true to herself.
How far are you willing to go to protect loved ones?
Oskar Guilbert, CEO of DON'T NOD says: “We are honored to be able to help PortaPlay bring this important story to life. I am very happy that Gerda: A Flame in Winter is our first externally developed title as a publisher. It aligns with our own vision and we feel that the game has this very own 'DON'T NOD DNA'.”
Hans Von Knut Skovfoged, CEO and Creative Director of PortaPlay, said: "We are beyond happy that Gerda: A Flame in Winter finally sees the light of day today and we can't wait to find out what players have to say about the title think. The game is very important to us and we really hope you enjoy it. It is inspired by the true stories of those civilians who tried not to give up during the tough times of World War II, including my own grandmother who was part of the resistance at the time. We are grateful to DON'T NOD for believing in Gerda and for joining us on our journey to tell this intimate story.”
