Gamestop is gradually changing under the leadership of Ryan Cohen. New things are now also arriving in Germany. The retail chain now also offers grading of trading cards.
Things are changing at Gamestop, especially in the United States. There are now special retro stores in which the retail chain revives the nostalgia of the video game industry. The company has also struck a chord with fans with its convertible Candy Con controllers. Recently, Gamestop even registered the Vantage Point brand, although it is unclear what exactly this is. The trademark registration at least points to gaming accessories.
trading card grading in Germany
The trading card business is also likely to increase sales in the United States. Gamestop offers a purchase and sale of trading cards and even offers discounts to fans with a service subscription to the Gamestop Pro Club. This means the company is strengthening this business area twice over and potentially retaining customers in the long term.
For the most part, the changes at Gamestop in Germany are still barely noticeable, but things seem to be slowly getting going. Membership for around 25 euros is also available here, with very attractive bonuses. The company recently announced an exclusive cooperation in "Bikini Berlin". Paris has set the example, and Berlin has followed suit: for two weeks in November, the "Gamestop Späti" will be the exclusive platform for Square Enix's world of experiences. In October, Gamestop Germany opened its innovative "Späti" in the Concept Shopping Mall opposite Breitscheidplatz. The cooperation with the game developer and publisher Square Enix is only the second of its kind in Europe.
The design consists of around 120 modular white industrial boxes that can be flexibly assembled on the 170 square meter area. When it comes to staging themed worlds, there are no limits to your imagination, whether these worlds revolve directly around gaming, manga & anime, collectible figures or a selected variety of merchandise.
Special services for gaming fans
Gamestop is also expanding in other areas and wants to convince fans in this country with a new type of service that the retailer is far from being outdated, but is actually hip. Using water transfer printing technology, gamers can have their game console turned into a unique lifestyle item at Gamestop. "From now on, gamers have the opportunity to transform their consoles and controllers into unique lifestyle accessories. "WaterDip" is the name of the innovative technology that is used exclusively in the new Gamestop design studio at the company headquarters in Tannheim. In a complex process, a decorative film selected by the customer is transferred to the housing of gaming consoles and controllers using water transfer printing. The offer is currently available for the PlayStation 5 Slim and Regular, and according to the company, the service will be expanded to include other models in the future.
In addition to the new design studio, Gamestop Germany operates its own repair workshop at the Tannheim location. Repairing broken items and saving resources is good for your wallet and promotes sustainability. The same applies to retrofitting old devices.
"For example, we offer our customers the option of having their controllers equipped with innovative Hall sticks," says Stephan Mayer. "By using Hall effect sensors for the analog sticks, inaccurate inputs are a thing of the past. The stick drift that occurs with controllers without Hall effect sensors is also completely avoided." Whether repairs, retrofitting or refining with a water dip: the process is convenient. Customers simply bring their devices to one of Gamestop Germany's 69 branches. Alternatively, there is the option of ordering conveniently via the web shop and having them shipped directly to Gamestop headquarters.
Another service is a little more promising, targeting the billion-dollar trading card game market and supporting Gamestop's own trading model. Since November 7, Gamestop Germany has been offering a unique opportunity for all collectors and fans of trading cards in collaboration with GSG (Gold Standard Grading Service).
In all German Gamestop stores, cards from a wide range of franchises, such as Yu-Gi-Oh!, Disney Lorcan, Magic the Gathering and Pokémon, can be submitted for evaluation. In addition to the long-term preservation of condition, a graded card has a high potential for increasing in value. This service is aimed at both experienced collectors and newcomers who want to have the condition of their cards professionally evaluated. The costs are manageable. Gamestop Germany charges 20,99 or 23,99 euros - depending on the variant.
