After several well-known publishers cancelled their participation, an industry giant has now confirmed its participation in Gamescom: Ubisoft has cancelled its participation in this year’s Gamescom Confirmed for 2022 in Cologne. However, it is unclear what will be presented there.
Ubisoft announced today that it will be an official exhibitor at Gamescom 2022 in Cologne. As an official partner of Gamescom, Ubisoft would like to welcome fans back to the halls of "Koelnmesse" this year and, after two years full of digital content, make its game worlds physically tangible again.
Ubisoft: Working on concept
After the cancellations by Nintendo, Sony, Take-Two, Wargaming and Activision-Blizzard, it was clear to some fans: the first Gamescom After two corona-related cancellations or changes in concept, it will be significantly different than usual. The organizers say that around 250 exhibitors have registered for the games fair, but there will definitely not be some high-profile stand setups. The atmosphere of the event could change accordingly, at least in those halls where the industry giants have traditionally brought in heavy equipment.
After all: THQ Nordic and Kalypso have already decided to participate. And now, with Ubisoft, another major publisher is following suit.
“The last two years have shown that our industry is able to create special moments with international appeal even in challenging times. Now, after two years full of exciting digital content and creative content creator concepts, we are happy to finally come back to Cologne,” says Ralf Wirsing, Managing Director Europe at Ubisoft. “For Ubisoft, being close to the community and sharing ideas with our fans has always been a matter close to our hearts. Gamescom is the epitome of discovering and experiencing new games together and we are therefore already looking forward to diving into our gaming worlds together with the fans again this year.”
However, it is unclear what Ubisoft will be doing on the Gamescom 2022 - and how it will be presented under the continuing special circumstances. At the same time, this points to some challenges that other publishers may have struggled with before. Ubisoft says it is currently working on a concept that "does justice to the local conditions and safety precautions in terms of content and organization." The well-being and safety of fans, employees and partners are, according to the publisher, "the top priority." So it's not just the content that's at stake for the French industry giant. Because Corona is likely to still be an issue in the fall (or to an increasing extent again), traditional concepts are apparently no longer an option, or at least they have to be changed in order to ensure safety.
Ubisoft plans to announce more details in the coming weeks. Gamescom will take place in Cologne from August 24th to 28th.
