When the gates of Gamescom open in two weeks, around 350.000 visitors from all over the world will flock to the exhibition halls of the cathedral city of Cologne on the days of the fair. In addition to the E3 in Los Angeles, which has traditionally been geared towards trade visitors, the Cologne computer fair is one of the most important events for the video game industry.
For the 2017 edition of the world's largest trade fair for interactive entertainment electronics, the organizers are putting on a varied supporting program: more events than ever before, more space than ever before, more politics than ever before - and therefore more fun than ever before?
Colorful supporting program: games, events, competitions
So soon after the E3 in Los Angeles, fans will miss big surprises, but Gamescom 2017 is still worth it for all players who want to try out the gaming highlights of tomorrow for themselves. Those who can wait up to several hours can try out promising titles such as the new offshoot of the Assassin's Creed series from Ubisoft, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 (Konami), Destiny 2 (Bungie), Fifa 18 (EA Sports) or Star Wars Play Battlefront 2 (DICE/EA) extensively. Publishers from all over the world have lots of new releases for PC, console or mobile devices. Often it is the small ideas that are no longer pursued. You wouldn't even want to imagine how many great things lie dormant in people's heads but are never revealed. Myriam and Christoph's thought process was similar; it was more fun when the two of them said that it would be great "to open your own café at some point when you're old." In conversations with friends, this joke became a serious option for making a living. The idea of combining e-sports and a restaurant took two years to develop. The elements she told us in the conversation are correspondingly broad and well thought out.
Console gamers in particular will be looking forward to the Gamescom 2017: Microsoft is bringing the brand new Xbox One X to Cologne to present the console to fans. Fans of Super Mario and Co., on the other hand, are subjecting the Nintendo Switch a hands-on test.
Niche game aficionados head to the INDIE ARENA BOOTH, which is bigger than ever. Over 70 developers from different countries present their innovative, experimental and creative ideas. Divided into a small booth and a big booth, fans will find numerous games - including from German developers such as Daedalic, Studio Fizbin and Innogames.
A trip to Pixxl Island, on the other hand, ensures a holiday atmosphere and relaxation. The lounge in Hall 5.1 invites you to build a major Minecraft project together with others or to compete with other players on adventure maps in order to beat their best times. The creative campaign is jointly organized by Gamestar and McDonald's. Those interested can find information about Pixxl Island on the official Topic Page. The colleagues from the computer magazine Gamestar should be mentioned at this point anyway: after all, the magazine is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
In the indoor arena in Hall 10.1 A varied community program runs for four days. In addition to the presentation of the Gamescom Awards on August 24th at 17 p.m. and the Cosplay Award on August 26th at 14 p.m., the German Casemod Championship will take place in the indoor arena. Fans also have the opportunity to meet their stars from the social media sector. In the outdoor area, on the other hand, Red Bull puts on entertaining bike shows. Music lovers will find on the Parking lot P8 a suitable contact point.
The Gamescom City Festival, which takes place from Friday to Sunday, is indispensable on the days of the fair. Thanks to the elimination of the Sunday of the trade fair, the festival is significantly upgraded by the organizers. At two places in the cathedral city, various acts let it rip on three days.

Gamescom 2017 Cosplay: Sharp costumes, sharp rules
Without costumed fans, Gamescom would not be the event it is. Cosplay therefore also plays a role at the Gamescom 2017 played a major role. In Cosplay Village in Hall 10 everything revolves around the best costumes - including tips from professionals and a repair station for quick repairs. Where foam weapons are expected, safety precautions are an important issue. The organizers rely on a similar security concept as in the previous year and carry out bag and backpack checks on exhibitors, visitors and media representatives who want to enter the holy exhibition halls. Visitors should leave luggage that is not absolutely necessary at home. All security measures apply from August 20, with the start of devcom. When you arrive, you should therefore plan to wait for the control and security measures.
The organizers have learned from the previous year: in consultation with the cosplayers, the costume conditions for cosplayers were simplified, but not defused. Instead of a large number of individual decisions, uniform rules apply to the entire cosplay community at Gamescom 2017, which should not restrict the creativity of fans in compliance with the gun laws of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Koelnmesse's house rules. To the Entrances to Hall 11 as well as on North entrance Trained employees will check the cosplayer's equipment for compliance with the rules. Objects that are not permitted can be left in a cloakroom and taken back with you when you leave the exhibition halls. Details on the Costume rules find fans on the official website.
Fixed part of Gamescom 2017: eSport
In addition to virtual reality, eSports is one of the trend topics at Gamescom 2017. The Puma Fragrances Cup 2017, which takes place on the ESWC stage, smells of fame and glory. At least to some extent, this year's trade fair motto "Simply play together" is reflected on the eSports stages. Well-known teams and individual players prove their skills in competitive titles or team games. The fact that several Bundesliga clubs send their own gamepad acrobats to the virtual stadiums already shows how valuable the topic of eSports is for the video game industry.
Also on the one upstream from Gamescom SPOBIS Gaming & Media 2017 Congress everything revolves around the topic of sport. Lectures and roundtables on topics from the field of eSports shed light on relevant facets of a sport whose great future is still to come. And while representatives of FC Schalke 04 talk about the advantages of virtual sport, arch rivals from Dortmund explain why BVB does not invest in eSport.
Because "eSportler" is not the only recognized profession in the gaming sector, interested parties at jobs&karriere receive the Gamescom Campus in Hall 10.2 the right information on career and development opportunities in the video game industry.
The Gamescom 2017 will be bigger, more diverse, more political and certainly more entertaining than ever before.
