SPIEL'6 will take place in Essen from October 9th to 22th: So that fans can keep track of around 1.800 new products, the organizing Friedhelm-Merz-Verlag is launching the updated game guide and this time also an app.
In a few weeks the SPIEL '22 will start at the exhibition center in Essen. Numerous innovations will be presented to the public at the world's leading trade fair for parlor games. Because trying things out is expressly desired, as a visitor you have to keep an overview somehow: two offers from the organizer should help with this.
"The SPIEL-Guide and the newly developed SPIEL-App provide orientation so that guests can keep track of things when visiting the trade fair," says Friedhelm Merz Verlag.
SPIEL in Essen: For the first time officially as an app
With the huge range of new products – there are around 1.800 – it is important to keep an overview. As a service, the organizer is offering the “SPIEL App” for the first time. It is intended to provide information on the exhibitors present and their innovations and also includes a watch list. In addition to the app, the SPIEL Guide is available for download on the publisher's website three weeks before the start of the trade fair.
"It contains lists of exhibitors and innovations, hall plans, program highlights and other useful information that will make visiting the trade fair easier," according to the organizers. The guide will also be distributed free of charge on the exhibition grounds.
The anticipation of SPIEL '22 can already be felt. Board game enthusiasts from all over the world will populate the game tables for four days at the beginning of October and try their way through the numerous titles.
“Around 950 game publishers from 56 nations are presenting more than 1.800 new board games,” the people from Bonn confirm the huge scope with numbers. These impressively demonstrated how much interest in board games has increased during the pandemic.
As the organizer, Friedhelm Merz Verlag, a subsidiary of Spielwarenmesse eG, is particularly pleased that big players such as Asmodee, Goliath, Hasbro or Nori's games return to SPIEL '22 after a break last year.
"Thanks to the balanced mix of exhibitors, the fair will become even more of a four-day festival for the national and international board game scene," says Managing Director Dominique Metzler.
Games for teachers
In addition to trends and innovations, SPIEL, as the central meeting place for the industry, makes a contribution to the further development of board game culture. “Parlor games stand for analogue fun like no other product worldwide. At SPIEL '22 there will again be a diverse supporting program,” promises Florian Hess, who has been acting as managing director alongside Dominique Metzler since this year.
A highlight is the Educator's Day on the Friday of the fair. Lectures and discussion rounds on the use of board games in the classroom, in community work or with senior citizens take place. For the first time, around 40 publishers are showing games in the Europa room that can be used particularly well in the classroom. The event is aimed at educators and all teachers.
On the Saturday of the fair, the Research Day continues with board games and science. From 11 a.m. to 18.30 p.m., the Boardgame Historian team will host several panel discussions in the Panorama room. The project, founded in 2020, promotes both networking among researchers in the field of board games and the scientific discourse about it. Also on the Saturday of the fair, from 15 to 16 p.m. in the Berlin hall, there will be a panel discussion entitled “What is the crisis doing to the gaming scene?”.
She focuses on the global changes of recent years and the influence they have on the board game industry. In addition, the European Games Collectors Guild (ESG) is dedicating its annual exhibition to five great game designers: Alex Randolph, Reinhold Wittig, Wolfgang Kramer, Klaus Teuber, Rainer Knizia. They have all fundamentally changed the way games are played and the way games are viewed. The exhibition is located in Hall 4, Stand 4E102.
AHA! – plus L, plus A
With so much on offer, the organizers are expecting a large crowd. "It is all the more important that health safety is guaranteed for all visitors," says the publisher. It was therefore decided early on that during SPIEL '22 a medical mouth and nose protection must be worn.
Due to the difficult to predict infection situation in the coming autumn, the agreed safety and hygiene concept is a preventive measure. At the same time, it creates clarity for all sides in terms of trade fair planning. "Ultimately, the well-being of visitors and exhibitors comes first," says Friedhelm Merz Verlag.
The so-called AHA rule, which the Robert Koch Institute regularly points out, continues to apply: keep your distance, observe hygiene, wear a mask in everyday life - add an L and another A: Ventilate and use the app - what is meant in this case the Corona warning app. It also fits the SPIEL app on the smartphone.
