Infernax, which launched earlier this year, currently has a Metacritic rating of 84/100 and has been praised by fans and media alike for its challenging gameplay, solid gameplay mechanics, and well-rounded 8-bit old-school nostalgia.
In the classic NES-era style we all know and love, you embark on a bloody journey after returning from battle to find your homeland ravaged by an evil force. These must be defeated if one is to save the starving people from the terror and darkness that overcame them in the hero's absence.
Demon slayers who want to trade their maces for some extra firepower can unlock The Stranger by naming the character "stranger" in a new save file. Then the dowdy hero dons a newfangled hockey mask, faces the horrors, and hopefully turns them into a bloody mess with the shotgun and/or trusty baseball bat. The Stranger comes equipped with a fierce shotgun, but its power comes with a risk - the blast is powerful enough to kill enemies from afar - but the recoil is fierce! So be careful not to fall into the void.
With secrets to unravel, powerful abilities to learn, and an assortment of spells to master, hopefully The Stranger is ready to take on whatever lurks in the shadows - and then the foes make hell hot. Along the way, your morale will be tested by making difficult decisions that will affect not only the fate of Upel but also that of the character himself, resulting in different gameplays.
The challenge ahead isn't for the faint of heart, but Infernax offers both a classic hardcore mode and a more forgiving (but no less challenging) casual mode to ensure maximum enjoyment. No matter how you approach it.
