The year 2019 does not end for Nintendo without the publication of the annual charts. Unsurprisingly, the titles downloaded most frequently from Nintendo eShop include several in-house Nintendo classics. However, the list is headed by one of the currently most successful games of all: Fortnite.

Nintendo lists a total of 25 games in the 2019 download charts for Nintendo Switch. Those who expect top placements for Pokémon or Super Mario or Link are not necessarily wrong, but fail to recognize the fact that the Nintendo Switch, with its broad line-up, has more to offer than the brands known as Nintendo classics.

No surprise: Fortnite tops the charts

The list of the 25 most popular games for Nintendo Switch - at least in the download version from the Nintendo eShop - is headed by the battle royale shooter Fortnite. This is unsurprising for a number of reasons. On the one hand, Fortnite is available for free as a free-2-play game, on the other hand, the shooter is currently one of the most successful video games worldwide. The fan base is huge - even on the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo made it to second place with its in-house Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Beat'em Up is one of the most anticipated games for Nintendo Switch and can therefore get a top 3 placement. Nevertheless: It is a small surprise that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate of all places was able to establish itself at the top. The price of the game remained stable throughout the year, but it still sold extremely well.

Minecraft, a kind of video game phenomenon of recent years, also made it onto the winners' podium. Minecraft is far from being old. The block building game is still very popular.

The remaining places are made up of a mixture of different genres: from the indie hit of a Cuphead to the adult hit man Mortal Kombat 11, many great titles are represented on the list of the most popular games for Nintendo Switch.

The entire list* from place 1 to 25 shows how multifaceted the download charts are in 2019:

2. Super Smash Bros. ultimate
3. Minecraft
5.Untitled Goose Game
6.Pokemon Sword
7. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
8. NBA 2K19
9. New Super Mario Bros. U-Deluxe
10. Dragon Ball FighterZ
11.Pokemon Shield
12. Super Mario Maker 2
13. Overcooked! 2
14.Hollow Knight
15. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
16. Luigi's Mansion 3
17. Cadence of Hyrule
18.Super Mario Party
19.Final Fantasy VII
20.Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
21. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order
23. Crypt of the NecroDancer
25. Mortal Kombat 11

Several very high-priced titles were able to place themselves well. Other places went to cheap indie games or even free-2-play games. The download list also shows that strong brands can regularly shine with strong historical figures.
