At this year's Nuremberg Toy Fair Press Preview, Ravensburger is showing the trading card game "Disney Lorcana", which will be launched internationally from August 2023.
The cards are hand-drawn and feature original and reimagined Disney characters. These move in a new and magical world with a unique game mechanics. According to Ravensburger, the game is suitable for newcomers and experienced trading card players, Disney fans and collectors alike.
Disney Lorcana: In stores from August 2023
"Disney Lorcan is the most ambitious project in Ravensburger’s recent history,” explained Florian Baldenhofer, International Category Director New Games, during the press preview. The name Lorcana, a combination of English lore - legends and arcana - magic, describes the fantastic, fictional gaming universe.
Players take on the role of powerful wizards, so-called Luminari, and bring Disney characters from Lorcana's "Great Illuminarium", a treasure trove of all Disney songs and stories, to life. "There are more Disney characters in this game than ever before, and it will feature more original Disney illustrations than any other product we've made," said John Balen, Disney vice president of product design. "Our dedicated Disney product design team has worked very successfully with Ravensburger and our partners at Walt Disney Animation Studios to create a unique Disney experience for fans of all ages."
So far, fans have only known individual characters, including Elsa, Captain Hook, Cruella de Vil and Robin Hood. Ravensburger is now showing the products available from September for the first time and also unveiling three new characters from the trading card game: Aurora, Hades and Mulan.
"Organized play" accompanies market launch
The first set of the trading card game will appear in Germany, the USA, Canada, Great Britain and France from August 2023. In Germany, initially on August 18th in specialist toy shops, accompanied by an extensive program for organized play, and from September 1st in other shops.
Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter will contain more than 200 playing cards to collect across three starter decks, booster packs, a gift set and the Illuminateer's Trove. To take players even deeper into the world of “Disney LorcanTo immerse yourself, themed and illustrated playmats, card sleeves, deck boxes and folders will also be available.
The Starter Decks consist of a balanced set of cards that allows players to get started right away. There are three different Starter Decks, each containing 60 cards in two of the six "Ink" colors - Amber and Amethyst, Emerald and Ruby, and Sapphire and Steel. The Starter Decks also contain a Booster Pack and tokens. Each booster pack consists of twelve random playing cards, including one foil card and two rare, epic, or legendary rarity cards.
The gift set includes two oversized foil trading cards and two playable foil cards featuring “Mulan – Imperial Soldier” and “Hades – King of Olympus”. Four booster packs and markers are also included. The Illumineer's Trove will be the ultimate introduction to "Disney Lorcan: The first chapter”. It contains eight booster packs, two deck boxes and a player's handbook in a themed storage box.
Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter will be available in English, German and French depending on the market. Four sets are released each year.
