Disney Lorcana is a real hit. With this trading card game, Ravensburger has managed to attract even newcomers to the genre. The theme of popular Disney characters, simple rules and good brand management are the pillars of its success. One number underlines this: According to the publisher, over a billion cards have been sold worldwide.
With over a billion cards sold and a growing fan base around the world, "Disney Lorcana" has taken players' hearts by storm. According to Ravensburger, some celebrities are also playing, such as Giovanni and Jana Ina Zarrella. They are "enthusiastic fans." Disney Lorcana is absolute fun for the whole family," says Giovanni Zarella. "It's super easy to learn, but still incredibly strategically profound." To make the gaming experience more accessible to a wider audience, Ravensburger launched the brand new board game “The beginning“. The game contains two basic decks with 30 cards each, a game board for two players, game pieces in character design, rules and game manuals as well as additional cards. This way, newcomers can get to know the different types of cards and the game rules and build up two ready-to-play “Disney Lorcan TCG decks".
But that’s not all: The future promises even more highlights: from world championships to new franchises like Disney/Pixar.
Disney Lorcana reports good figures
Since the launch of the "Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game", a real hype has been sparked around the trading card game from Ravensburger. The first set, "The First Chapter", met with overwhelming demand. Henning Estor, managing director of the organized play store "Yodasdata", can confirm this: "Customers were already standing outside the store when it opened and the last ones left satisfied after our first tournament at 22 p.m. In between was the day with the highest sales we have ever had in the store."
The launch of “Disney Lorcan“ was enthusiastically celebrated. Especially at the Spiel 2023, “Disney Lorcana” dominated the trade fair and was the number one topic of conversation in the entire board game community.
With impressive figures, “Disney Lorcana” confirms its worldwide success: more than a billion tickets sold and over 400.000 downloads of the “Disney Lorcan TCG Companion App”, an app for collecting and supporting the play of the trading card game.
A very committed and large community has now formed in Germany and Austria, and worldwide with more than 15.000 active community members on Discord and Twitch speaks volumes. The game also has over 172.000 followers on social platforms, confirming its continued popularity.
Since the launch in September 2023, there have been numerous events and tournaments. Over 200 local retailers and Germany and Austria are already part of the weekly "Disney Lorcana League". The "Disney Lorcana Challenge", a regional tournament format in which players can qualify for the European Championships, was sold out within minutes with over 2000 participants.
The current set will be available in stores in mid-November: All cards from “azure sea“ can then also be used to update existing Disney Lorcana decks and together with all previously released sets: “The first chapter","Rise of the flood figures","The Inklands","Ursula's Return" and "skylights“ can be played.
The Future of Disney Lorcana
In addition to the pure set releases, Ravensburger is also working on the program around the trading card game. This primarily appeals to the hardcore of the scene. For the future, Ravensburger is therefore planning further events and the integration of new franchises:
- tournaments 2024/25: The European Championship will take place in December at Disneyland Paris, followed by the 2025 World Championships at the Walt Disney World Resort.
- New franchises: Fans can look forward to “Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers” later this year. Other franchises such as Pocahontas and Disney/Pixar are planned for the coming years.
- Disney Lorcana Quest: A new event format aimed at Disney fans is coming in 2025. It will focus on casual gaming, learning the game, cooperative play and multiplayer experiences.
