The fear of Cyberpunk 2077 is rampant

With Cyberpunk 2077 a significant title is rolling towards the games industry, at least the expectations are high among gamers, but also among other publishers and developers who are now partially postponing the release dates of their games in order not to compete with CD Projekt Red's mega-project have to. Who's Afraid of Cyberpunk 2077?

Just in time for Halloween publishers and developers have their pants full. After Cyberpunk 2077 was postponed by three weeks to December 10th, the release dates of some games have also been postponed. Recently, the Hamburger Spieleschmiede Rockfish announced that Everspace 2 will start later in the "Early Access" phase. They have identified overlapping target groups and do not want to compete with what is probably the most anticipated video game in history, said Rockfish CEO Michael Schade.

The industry seems busy given the approaching release of the role-playing game. Fans often show understanding for the postponement of Cyberpunk 2077, in some cases they vent their anger in an unacceptable way and even threaten the developers. Other game studios, however, indirectly show respect for cyberpunk developers.

Because of Cyberpunk: Path of Exile 3.13 comes later

It seems hard to imagine that Cyberpunk 2077 could be a failure. The video game is not yet available and is already being showered with laurels. And indeed, there are many signs that indicate that CD Projekt Red could actually pull off the big coup with Cyberpunk 2077. The developers themselves stated at a financial conference that they were "very satisfied" with the pre-orders registered at that time, they had them The Witcher 3 pre-order numbers exceeded - and at this point in the summer the biggest wave of pre-orders was still to come. The publication of the first reviews in particular should give a significant boost to business, but this will now last until the beginning of December, the month in which the Christmas business is also booming. For Cyberpunk 2077 these are ideal conditions for a sales success, especially since the next-gen consoles Xbox Series X | S and Playstation 5 are already well established on the market and gamers are hungry for AAA games.

The reverse is also true: The release of Cyberpunk 2077 could screw up the Christmas business for many a publisher.

Even Grinding Gear Games, the creators of Path of Exile, prefer not to compete directly with Cyberpunk 2077. As CEO Chris Wilson explains in a forum post, they don't want to put PoE players in a position where they have to choose between Path of Exile and Cyberpunk 2077. He probably also means that if players can choose between the two games, they would often choose the cyberpunk role play. Actually, one would have wanted to publish the extension with the serial number 11 on December 3.13th, the project has now been postponed until "sometime in January 2021".

It seems as if Cyberpunk 2077 could become such a cross-target group highlight that developers do not want to see their own projects drown in insignificance. The fear of Cyberpunk 2077 is rightly circulating: Not only pre-order numbers, also previously known playful details - and there are countless - point to a technically convincing game. And anyway: It is unthinkable that the makers of The Witcher series, of all people, put an RPG project in the sand.

The open-world sci-fi role-playing game has everything that fans might find good in an RPG: countless iconic characters, a story that drives the game forward and can lead to multiple endings, fights with different tactical characteristics, cameo appearances, an impressive look including ray tracing or DLSS, synchronized dialogues and a perfect dirty setting in cyberpunk style.

You have to search a long time to find something that you don't like about the previously known concept of Cyberpunk 2077. Unless you basically can't do anything with the topic - but you would probably at least try out the role-player yourself.

And as if the video game wasn't enough of a threat, accessories are also being rolled out around the brand: A comic release is released via Dark Horse Comics or the Netflix series "Cyberpunk: Edgerunner". The usual merchandise stuff seems almost irrelevant: from the coloring book to the Johnny figure, there is everything a gamer's heart desires.

Cyberpunk 2077 is expected to be released on December 10th. The game will be available on PC via Steam and GOG. Otherwise, the role-playing game for Google Stadia, Xbox One and Playstation 4 will be launched and will also be playable on the next-gen consoles.
