A lot has changed in the Steam community since the release of the Steam Deck. When a new game comes onto the market, one of the first questions is usually: Is there Steam Deck support? Official support for the handheld device is therefore a big bonus. Blizzard wants to use this in Diablo 4. The game will be released on October 17th not only for Valve's gaming platform, but will also be easily playable on the handheld.
Steam with cross-play progression
Blizzard wants to breathe life back into Diablo 4 with the Season of Blood, which can be seen in the release plans. Diablo 4 will be the second title that the game studio will release on Valve's platform after Overwatch 2. This can no longer be shaken: the entry in the Steam shop is already live and fans can add the title to their wish list.
The fact that the debut coincides with the start of the new season and therefore also with new content is a clever move. Because: Not only is the game celebrating its release, it will also support full cross-play progression on Steam. Blizzard is probably speculating on some second purchases from existing fans who want to play the action role-playing game on their handheld. The currently available versions of the game for Battle.net, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 are supported.
This also applies: As with Oberwatch 2, a Battle.net account is required to play via Steam. The version on Valve's platform will also support Steam achievements as well as friend lists and other platform features.
However, the full compatibility of Diablo 4 with the Steam Deck is probably the biggest plus point: Blizzard's community boss Adam Fletcher confirms that the role-playing game will be "verified", meaning that it has passed all the necessary tests. The aim is to keep access to the game “as simple as possible”.
If everything works as hoped, Blizzard could win back some fans or get new players excited about the action role-playing game with the simultaneous release of the Season of Blood and the Steam Deck version including verification. The release around Halloween was also cleverly chosen; the desire to wander around in dark worlds is particularly strong at this time.
