Friedhelm Merz Verlag has announced the winners of this year's German Games Prize. First place went to Elizabeth Hargrave's Kennerspiel des Jahres "Fingenschlag". The title is followed by "The Taverns in the Deep Valley" by Wolfgang Warsch and Teotihuacan: The City of Gods by Daniele Tascini and Dávid Turczi in second and third place.

The result of the vote for the German Game Prize 2019, which is awarded annually during the international game days in Essen, has been determined. For the audience award, fans and experts choose what they consider to be the five best board games of the respective year. The answers are weighted from one to five for the area “family and adult games”. In addition, the best children's game is chosen.

German player award 2019 without surprises

The evaluation of the incoming votes is evaluated by an independent institute, Friedhelm Merz Verlag describes the procedure for evaluating votes on the official publisher's website. In addition, only those ballot papers on which names and addresses are given are valid; Double votes are excluded from the evaluation. The ranks named by the players and experts are converted into a point system (five points for first place, one point for fifth place). The publisher ultimately derives the top 10 list of the German Games Award from the scores.
This year, the board game Flügelschlag by Elizabeth Hargrave won the German Gold Award for Games. The title from the house of Feuerland has already won the game of the year Kennerspiel of the year 2019 and is largely rated positively by fans and specialist media.

Second place at the German Games Prize 2019 went to "Die Tavernen im Tiefen Thal" by Wolfgang Warsch, not least because of the clever mix of mechanics (here the review to the board game). Third place, and thus the German Bronze Game Award 2019, went to the expert game Teotihuacan, published by Schwerkraft.
There are hardly any surprises in the other places either. “Detective” from Pegasus Spiele, which was highly rated this year, came in sixth place. Spirit Island, too Pegasus Spiele, even made it to fourth place. In fifth place, Gravity Publishing was able to place another title in the top 10: The Architects of the West Franconian Empire by Shem Phillips and SJ Macdonald.
With Just One from Asmodee, another board game selected by the Game of the Year jury makes it onto the list of the best: Just one, who is the reigning laureate of the red pawn. At least a bit surprising: Carpe Diem by Stefan Feld (here the review about the board game) does not make it into the list of the ten best board games of the current year.
These ten best board games were chosen by fans as part of the German Game Award 2019:
  1. Flapping wings, Elizabeth Hargrave (Tierra del Fuego Publishing)
  2. The taverns in the deep valley, Wolfgang Warsch (Schmidt Games)
  3. Teotihuacan: The city of the gods, Daniele Tascini and Dávid Turczi (Schwerkraft-Verlag)
  4. spirit island, R. Eric Reuss (Pegasus Spiele)
  5. Architects of the west of France, Shem Phillips and SJ Macdonald (Gravity Publishing)
  6. Detective, Ignacy Trzewiczek and Przemysław Rymer and Jakub Łapot (Portal Games / Sales: Pegasus Spiele)
  7. Underwater cities, Vladimir Suchy (Delicious Games)
  8. Newton, Nestore Mangone and Simone Luciani (Cranio Creations / Distribution: Asmodee)
  9. Just one, Ludovic Roudy and Bruno Sautter (Repos Production / Distribution: Asmodee)
  10. Gloomhaven, Isaac Childres (Tierra del Fuego)

The best kid's game is this year Concept kids - animals by Gaetan Beaujannot and Alain Rivollet (Repos Production / Distribution: Asmodee).

The prizes will be awarded during the 2019 International Game Days in Essen. SPIEL'19 will take place from October 24th to 27th. Information also under www.spiel-messe.com/de.
