Fantasy Flight Games has announced a new dungeon crawler from the series with Descent: Legends of the Dark. The board game relies on app support as well as countless miniatures and 3D terrain. The lavish features in an equally lavish game box have their price: around 175 US dollars, the equivalent of around 147 euros, is what Fantasy Flight Games calls up for the game in its own online shop.

The popular Descent board game series will be continued in the first half of 2021. Descent: Legends of the Dark, the new offshoot, should come onto the market around the second quarter of the year. A leak was confirmed at the beginning of the year that a project was in progress. Fantasy Flight Games has now made an official announcement at SPIEL.digital and also published a reveal teaser.

Descent: Legends of the Dark is a board game with an app

The cooperative board game is aimed at up to four players, but also has a solo mode. A companion app serves as technological support for the analog game concept: The dungeon crawler uses a game format that is already known from similar titles, such as Journey through Middle-earth.

A teaser shows the material:

More information

The focus of Descent: Legends of the Dark is a 16-mission campaign that is set in the Descent setting of Terrinoth. In each chapter different goals are waiting to be fulfilled by the players. Last but not least, this is also reflected in the variance of the opponents: Players not only fight against barbarians or villains, but also have to defend themselves against the undead and golems, among other things. The companion app for Descent: Legends of the Dark determines how the opposing units act on the game board, which has been spiced up with 3D models.

As with Lord of the Rings: Journey through Middle-earth, players can maintain their characters between the individual tasks and thus adjust or improve their equipment, for example. It will be central to the fact that weapons and equipment can be upgraded and, among other things, provided with bonus effects. Of course, the app saves the respective progress. The battles are decided by rolling the dice, overall the basic gameplay has been noticeably revised compared to the previous part of the Descent series: In Descent: Legends of the Dark players have three actions per turn, so they can attack, move or interact in this way.

The base game contains six heroes with individual skills that will be adjusted over the course of the campaign. The box comes with a total of 40 miniatures and 46 3D terrain pieces. The last thing in particular is exciting: the playing field actually becomes available on several levels.

Fantasy Flight Games also points out that Descent: Legends of the Dark does not function as part of the third edition of Journeys in the Dark and therefore the game material is not compatible with the content that was released in 2012. Descent: Legends of the Dark has been announced for the second quarter of 2021, with the "Blood and Flame" campaign being the first in a trilogy - the other two chapters will appear later as expansions.

The German-language version of Descent: Legend of the Dark sets Asmodee around. The price in specialist retailers is around 160 euros for pre-orders.
