Fans of the nostalgic first-person shooter Star Wars: Dark Forces can look forward to the coming year. As the developer and publisher Nightdive Studios has announced, the remaster of the game is scheduled to come onto the market in 2024.
Fans have been waiting for the remaster for a long time - after all, it's about one of the best Star Wars video games, which will now be brought onto the market in a new look. In September, Nightdive Studios announced that they were working on the remaster - and it has now become official that the title is scheduled to launch in 2024.
New version after almost 30 years
The classic Star Wars shooter came out in 1995. The old school shooting game still has many fans today, was also graphically impressive back then and gave Star Wars lovers the opportunity to experience a doom feeling in George Lucas' sci-fantasy epic.
The Dark Forces remaster is said to have 4K graphics and 120 FPS on all platforms except the Nintendo Switch to reach. Despite the major improvements, Dark Forces should still play like the original. Fans of the original will be particularly happy about this, as the retro gaming experience is retained. The original version should also be clearly reflected in the remaster in terms of game mechanics.
Back then, the game set a new benchmark for first-person shooters, not least because of the story. Fans took on the role of a defector from the Galactic Empire who became a hired mercenary, ultimately joining the Rebel Alliance's covert operations division. After the infiltration of the Empire, the secret Dark Trooper project was revealed.
Dark Forces was one of the first back then Star Wars-Shooter at all. The video game introduced Kyle Katarn, a character who was later expanded into video games and the expanded universe, among other things, but is no longer part of the official canon today. Much to the chagrin of his fans. After his appearance in Dark Forces, the Jedi appeared in several sequels, such as Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. Today Katarn is part of the so-called “Star Wars Legends”.
In addition to the improved gameplay and high-resolution graphics, important features of the Dark Forces remaster include gamepad support and new lighting effects. The new version is created on the proprietary KEX engine.
The original is available for PC and Playstation. Owners of other consoles will also be able to play the new version. According to Nightdive Studios, Dark Forces Remaster will be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game can already be added to your wish list on Steam; The specific release date was February 28th - the original version of the shooter was also released on that day.
