There has recently been a lot of anger among crowdfunding fans about Mythic Games, because the campaigns for HEL: The Last Saga and Anastyr would no longer have been possible without additional financial resources. Now the miniatures specialist CMON stepped into the breach and secured the rights for the games.
Crowdfunding as a safe business – times seem to be passing more and more. Due to the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, there have already been changes, particularly in transport and production costs. Recently, inflation and cost increases have continued to drive down prices. This is a problem for publishers. The most recently affected was Mythic Games, a publisher experienced in crowdfunding whose Kickstarter projects generated millions. And yet things got into trouble, resources ran out - money, staff, time - everything was scarce.
CMON secures rights
It was only in December 2022 that Mythic Games restructured its own store due to the ongoing problems and wanted to focus on a small portfolio of three games: Darkest Dungeon, HEL: The Last Saga and Anastyr. The aim was to manage the projects and bring them to a successful conclusion. But nothing came of it.
On Kickstarter Mythic Games stated about HEL's campaign that it was impossible to complete the project. The only way out: You would have to ask the supporters for more money and demand an enormous amount of patience from them. For the publisher, this did not appear to be an “acceptable solution”. Mainly because fans had already raised additional funds for the games Darkest Dungeon and 6: Siege; Even though in the case of Darkest Dungeon around five and a half million US dollars had been flushed into the coffers. The consequences of Corona and the effects of Russia's war of aggression on Ukraine created an extremely unfavorable market environment for the Luxembourg-based publisher. Mythic Games is not the only publisher facing economic challenges, but the issue surrounding the outcome of the crowdfunding campaigns is a good example of how risky, especially expensive ones Kickstarterprojects can ultimately be for fans, global developments should not play a role.
To save HEL and Anastyr, the miniatures specialist CMON has now stepped in. However, the publisher behind the board games in the Zombicide series, among others, looks at the situation soberly: According to this, after a “careful examination” they came to the conclusion that neither HEL: The Last Saga nor Anastyr are ready for publication. Significant effort is required to complete the board games. The message is still a glimmer of hope for fans, after all, many have sunk considerable sums into these two campaigns: While HEL: The Last Saga generated 2,2 million US dollars through the crowdfunding campaign, Anastyr generated around 1,1 million . A lot was promised, including epic history and great miniatures. CMON will now have to measure itself against this. However, they also know exactly and take precautions: The publisher statedthat both games would undergo a development process and additional playtesting - this could ultimately result in the games being different from what was promised as part of the campaign.
There is a downer for supporters of the campaign: CMOn states that supporters are entitled to a version of the games in English or French, but this does not include planned expansions. Shipping and taxes must be paid for those products that go beyond the core version. Mythic Games, on the other hand, asserts that supporters can still have their investments refunded. In reality, however, things seem to be different, at least according to numerous comments Kickstarter the close. Some fans have been waiting for their money since 2022.
