With the expert game Civolution and the card family game Roaring 20s, Pegasus Spiele Publishing partner Deep Print Games has released two completely different titles for SPIEL Essen 2024: The complex civilization game Civolution by Stefan Feld is aimed primarily at fans of strategic Eurogames, while the bidding game Roaring 20s by Leo Colovini provides lighter entertainment.
The expert game Civolution, written by Stefan Feld, challenges up to four players aged 14 and over to create new civilizations as students of the Technical Creation Academy over the course of four eras. The development options are diverse: from cultural and technical progress to evolutionary biological adaptations, there are numerous paths to victory.
The key is to be able to use your own console competently: the competitors use it to control their moves, while at the same time it functions as a storage facility for resources and as a memory aid. Basic modules are also stored here, which are activated during the action phase using a dice mechanism and can also be upgraded later. The modules range from "hiking" and "discovery" to "provisioning" and "reproduction" and even "mutation". Each module can be unlocked by a specific combination of two dice numbers.
Resources are collected by moving around the continent in the middle of the table. This is also where the progress plan with nine scoring categories is located, as well as dice and boards that can be earned during the game. The continent and the weighting of the scoring categories are randomly selected at the start of the game. Each game of Civolution therefore offers new challenges, but also new opportunities that always require a different approach. Civolution is available at a recommended retail price of 89,99 euros.
There is also something more subtle: “Roaring 20s”
The bidding game Roaring 20s provides quick fun with an easy start. Here, three to five players aged eight and over try to lure the hottest dinosaurs to their party. They can be convinced with unusual snacks or bribed with colorful trinkets. In each round, players bid on a dinosaur from the dinosaur pile using the bidding cards in their hand. But be careful: every dinosaur has different preferences! If your own hand cards do not match the dinosaur's snack preferences, you can use the trinkets as a bribe.
Whoever bids the highest can put the dinosaur on their own guest list. But passing at the right moment can also be an advantage, because this allows players to secure new bidding cards from the display. If you pass early enough, you have a larger selection. At the end of the game, you get points for each individual dinosaur as well as for pairs, triplets and consecutive number sequences. Leo Colovini's card game not only impresses with a clever title and funny illustrations by Annika Heller. With its small format and clear rules, it is also ideal for on the go, whether traveling or at your own dinosaur party. Roaring 20s is available at a recommended retail price of 9,99 euros.
