The roleplay convention is long gone, at least as a standalone event. The convention will now be integrated into a much more comprehensive event: the CCXP Cologne. The abbreviation stands for "Comic Con Experience" - the name alone reveals that the organizers have big plans for the thematic orientation. The new CCXP Cologne will take place from 27th to 30th June 2019 in the halls of Koelnmesse in the Deutz district - where fans usually find Gamescom. Around 80 exhibitors and 200 artists, including some Hollywood stars, will present themselves as part of the new convention in June. Tickets are already available.
"More Than Just a Comic Convention"
If the organizers have their way, the CCXP will be "more than just a comic convention". On more than 65.000 square meters in the exhibition halls 6 to 8 there will be space for around 80 exhibitors and 200 nationally and internationally known artists. In terms of topics, the CCXP is a multifaceted event. Films and series, comics, books, music, but also cosplay: all of this should attract almost 27 visitors to Cologne from June 30th to 70.000th. This year, the concept of the Brazilian company Omelete will be carried out together with Koelnmesse GmbH for the first time. Well-known brands have announced their presence, including Panini, Iron Studios, Warner and Universal Pictures. As is usual for such con concepts, some Hollywood stars will also find their way to Cologne, such as Benedict Wong, Mark Pellegrino or Zachary Levi.
At the CCXP Cologne 2019 everything revolves around comic universes, entertainment and games. Fan groups and cosplayers, but also the supporting program itself, should create the right atmosphere. Premieres and panels await in the "Thunder Theater", while the "Ultra Stage" has room for around 400 visitors to follow the stage programme. YouTubers, Instagrammers and bloggers should - as "stars of the scene" - broadcast their influencer content live from the CCXP Cologne - and fans are allowed to watch. Overall, the CCXP seems to be trying to reach a young or adolescent core target group, but the appearances of the arriving comic artists in particular may also attract some experienced collectors. The "Playground" will also work across all ages and target groups - after all, board and card games, but also tabletops are now real crowd pullers.
“The CCXP Cologne is an event for all age groups! With this event, we want to establish the largest and most important live experience in the field of pop culture in Europe in the future.”
Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse GmbH
The organizers have chosen two particularly successful franchises as special themes for this year: Harry Potter and Superman. An entertainment package is being put together around both theme worlds, including original props and photo opportunities.
The international comparison shows that the new event has growth potential. With 227.000 visitors, the CCXP has developed into the largest comic con worldwide, explains Pierre Mantovani, CEO of the Omelete Company. With the first event in Cologne, the aim is now to establish the event as a successful concept in Europe. Koelnmesse offers ideal conditions for this, says Mantovani. Indeed, the CCXP Cologne could become a fixed date in the event calendar, similar conventions are registering a significant increase in visitor numbers nationwide.
The Cologne Comic Convention is open on the days of the fair into the evening hours: Thursday and Friday from 12 noon to 21 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 21 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 20 p.m.
Tickets for CCXP Cologne 2019 have been available since the end of February - at staggered prices. A standard ticket costs between 30 and 149 euros, depending on the date of purchase and validity, children pay reduced prices. The costs for special collector tickets with additional fan services are between 245 and 354 euros. In the luxury class, prices start at 1.150 euros, for which ticket holders then receive access to a VIP lounge, among other things.
