To mark the 5th anniversary of the popular trick-taking game Claim, there is a special edition for newcomers and fans of the game.
SHARE

Scott Almes is known worldwide for his Tiny Epic's series, in which he brings more or less complex games into a small box format. But his Claim series is also a popular two-player trick-taking game for many players. After 5 years, the series received a special Limited Edition, in which all the material from Claim 1 and 2, as well as seven new factions, were added to the game. The Limited Edition has been available in Germany for a few months now thanks to Game Factory. You can find out how the Limited Edition performs in our review.

The king is dead! This morning he was found with his face buried in a wine barrel. Whether he was murdered or simply looked too deeply into the barrel, no one knows. It doesn't matter. This is your chance! The people need a new king and only two people are possible. But first you have to convince the factions, because only then can you ascend to the throne.

trick-taking game with a twist

Not much has changed in the well-known principle of Claim. A game lasts for two phases. In the first, both players receive 13 cards with which we can recruit followers. In the second phase, we use the followers we have won to win over factions in the usual trick-taking game manner. Whoever has managed to convince at least three of five factions wins the game and ascends to the throne.

In the first phase, the top card of the draw pile is revealed. This card is the card that is played for. The active player must now play any card from his hand. The opposing player must then follow suit, i.e. play the same faction. This should be done with a higher number if possible in order to win the trick. The person who wins the trick receives the card that is on display. The loser takes the top card from the draw pile. These cards are needed for the next phase. After 13 rounds, the first phase is over and it's all about the throne.

In the second phase, the cards from the first phase are used to win tricks. To do this, the active player plays one of his cards, which must be followed by the opponent. The winner receives both cards. After all cards have been played, the game ends. The person who has the most cards from a faction wins the game.

However, the trick-taking game comes with a clever twist. Each of the 17 factions included in the game has a special effect that affects the gameplay. For example, knights can automatically defeat goblins if they meet each other. If bards are in play, you can win the game with them if you have the longest straight (2, 3, 4, 5...) of bard cards. The game plays slightly differently depending on the factions you choose.

New mode for 3 – 4 players

A new feature is a mode for 3 - 4 players. In a game with three players, everyone plays for themselves, in a game with four players in two teams. The game is basically the same as the game with two players, except that in phase 1 the top two cards are revealed. The person who won the trick can choose one of the two cards. The second person takes the second card that is on display, and the rest draw one from the draw pile. In the second phase, everyone plays until all the cards have been played. The person or team that has won the most factions wins the game.

Also nice: The Big Box comes with scenarios that tell a funny little story and provide factions that you can play with. This is a great introduction, especially for beginners. Photo: Sven Karsten

In addition to the factions from Claim and Claim 2, there are seven new factions. The game can also now be played with three or four people. For the current price of around 30 - 35 euros, you can't really complain, because there is definitely a lot of variety on offer here.
