The British publisher Modiphius is bringing out Specter, a board game that relies on the license to kill. The title is due to appear in spring 2022 and is aimed at two to four players aged around 14 years and over.
Granted, you had to look twice to see that this isn't an Austin Powers board game. Once you realized that, the surprise was great. So far, 007 has not been given the honor of becoming a star in a board game particularly often. And the smart agent in Specter isn't really a star either: It's about following in the footsteps of the villains.
change of perspective
As Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Rosa Klebb or Raoul Silva, the players have to make life difficult for the British agent. The idea allows even die-hard Bond fans a change of perspective: Instead of concentrating on the good deeds of the charming MI5 agent with a license to kill, you do exactly the opposite in the new board game Spectre. However, the title is not cooperative, for the players it is about putting themselves at the top of the criminal organization - so they compete for the post of "number 1".
"The James Bond film franchise is beyond iconic," said Chris Birch, co-founder of Modiphius Entertainment. "While most fans put themselves in the shoes of the hero, this board game puts players in the shoes of Bond villains instead."
Meanwhile, James Bond tries to thwart the plans. For once, it is not the scriptwriters who decide whether he succeeds, but the players themselves. The Specter board game could become a kind of fan service. Modiphius promises iconic content from the films: weapons, locations, and of course, characters. Players have to assemble equipment, can send spies or even blackmail their rivals in order to achieve their only goal: to lead a criminal empire to power.
The board game Specter is being developed by Kaedama, a team of French authors. And not just any, but some of the most well-known in the industry: Antoine Bauza, Corentin Lebrat, Ludovic Maublanc and Théo Rivière. On the part of Modiphius, they are supported by Stefano Guerriero, Javier Angeriz-Caburrasi and Juan Echernique.
Moon base and world-destroying super laser? Are there. The board game should appear in stores in spring 2022. Modiphius Entertainment is known, among other things, for the The Elder Scrolls tabletop Call to arms or Fallout: Wasteland.
