A few weeks ago, the German game publisher Mirakulus announced that it intends to bring the open drafting and hand management game Inheritors, which was released last year, to the German market. After Elia and the glittering something, Inheritors - The Heirs is the second title of the publisher IceMakes, which is financed by the game company and is therefore to be localized in German. We were allowed to test the English version and can tell you whether the game could be something for you.
In the middle of the night a proclamation was issued: "His Majesty has passed away". Dying, he did not name an heir, but left us these last words: "Crown he who proves most virtuous to succeed him." At dawn his heirs have set out to invite the nobility and engage in diplomacy, for only one may end up sitting on the coveted throne.
generate influence
Inheritors is an open drafting and hand management card game for 2-4 players. We slip into the role of an heir to the king. In the game we try to increase our influence in the five realms. The empires are represented by influence cards in five different colors. We increase our influence by placing the influence cards in front of us in ascending order from 1 - 6 for each individual kingdom and by completing quests and honors.
We receive new influence cards for our project from the draw pile or from the open market, which is divided into three rows. In order to be allowed to take new cards, we must first place cards in hand on one or more piles in the market. In this way, more and more cards accumulate in the three rows of the market, which in turn we can take to achieve our goals.
Special Abilities
In addition to the influence cards of the kingdoms, we find relics, old tomes and talents among the hand and market cards. While relics and old tomes can give us additional victory points at the end of the game, talent cards help us to increase our influence in the realms. For example, you can use the spy to steal an influence card from an opponent's hand in order to increase your own influence in a realm, or use the lobbyist to skip a number in the sequence and thus directly gain more influence.
The abilities of the five available clans provide further help in the fight for influence. These bring us, for example, point bonuses, let us play more cards and much more. If we achieve three or more influence in a realm, we can use the corresponding clan card and thus the ability of the clan. However, we can only have one clan per game. So you have to think carefully about which ability you want to use. You should also be quick, because each clan can only be used by one player.
A game with open cards
Because all information about the market or the riches of all players is openly visible, we can specifically prevent our opponents from generating points. The market in particular is crucial for this, since we can snatch cards from under the noses of others. In addition, our clan's talent cards and ability help us thwart the plans of others. As a result, Inheritors has a high level of interaction. It's still nice that such setbacks never feel too severe. There is always some way to adjust your strategy and react to the situation.
At the end of the game, the highest Influence cards from each empire are added up. These account for the majority of victory points. The players receive further victory points by having a large number of old tomes in their hand and by completing relics, quests and honors. The latter challenge us to fulfill certain tasks and can help to make up a few extra points in order to ultimately win the game. In the end, however, they didn't have too much of an impact in our test games. They simply didn't give us enough points for that.

Conclusion
Although Inheritors comes in a compact box, it has a lot of depth and is therefore perfect as a travel or takeaway game. Especially if you want to bring a slightly more challenging game. That's not to say that Inheritors is badass, quite the opposite in fact. Inheritors is a game that works well in any constellation. It's easy to learn and can entertain family gamers as well as hardcore tacticians.
What is sometimes annoying during the game is that you can quickly lose track of your hand cards. You pick up a series of cards from the market and boom, you have 10+ cards in your hand. The first time we were a bit overwhelmed by the situation, this eased over time, however, because you can get into the game better and better and find solutions to either get rid of your cards.
The quality of the maps is also high in the English version. We can't really complain here. Merely wrapped cards no longer fit in the box, since it is perfectly adapted to the material of the game. This could bother some people. But what Inheritors offers in terms of size, quality and fun, we would like to see this combination more often. In any case, we had a lot of fun with the game in our test games and will often take it with us to our game nights.
