Assault on Doomrock has a long history behind it. The original version of the adventure game was released in 2015 via Kickstarter financed and enjoyed great popularity among supporters. It was particularly convincing as a solo game. With the Ultimate Edition, BD Games gave the game another big boost in 2022 and introduced various improvements. In Germany, Grimspire took over responsibility for the German-language version of the game. You can find out how well Assault on Doomrock does in the following review.
Fate calls for brave heroes who can survive a dangerous journey and try to challenge the evil that lurks in Doomrock. Unfortunately for all the inhabitants of the land, there is only one band of heroes who agrees to take on this adventure. You.
On to new adventures!
Assault on Doomrock is an adventure game that can be played in a kind of campaign consisting of three acts. With each ongoing act, stronger enemies await us. Each act consists of two parts: the adventure and the battle. While you fight the monster at the end, we try to prepare our squad as well as possible for the battle during the adventure.
During the adventure we have the opportunity to travel to different (known and unknown) areas and visit different places in the current area. The places present us with a variety of decisions. We can trigger events, buy items in the local shop, rest and much more. Depending on what we do, we need more or less time, take damage or receive bonuses or negative effects. During the adventure we try to use our time as best as possible in order to get as good a start as possible on the next battle, which is then triggered as soon as the time runs out and we can no longer carry out any activities or actions.
A real, true hero!
All players take on the role of a hero. At the beginning of a campaign you are faced with a big choice. There are 20 different heroes to choose from. There are also 20 different trait cards, which, like the heroes, also have different abilities. This means you can create your very own hero or heroine right from the start.
During the adventure, you gradually try to improve all of the heroes in the squad and equip them with new equipment and new skills. This is important in order to be well-equipped in the battle that follows the adventure to take on the boss of the current act. This boss is randomly drawn at the start of an act and is initially unknown to all players. During the adventure, if you want or can spend the time, you can find out who you will be up against at the end and thus go into the final battle better prepared.
And off into battle!
At the end of each adventure there is a final battle that seals the end of the act. This is a matter of life and death, because the battle only ends when all enemies, the boss or all heroes have been defeated. The battle in Assault on Doomrock takes a very interesting approach to how battles are represented. There is no fixed battle area, instead enemies and heroes are represented as groups with markers. If a hero's marker is next to an enemy marker, both are in the same group. This plays an important role for some effects, as some attacks damage an entire group. If there is a hero in the group in question alongside enemy units, he could also suffer damage. Various effects can cause hero and enemy markers to move from one group to the next or become isolated.
In general, battles are fought by placing dice. At the beginning of a battle round, all players roll their dice. These can be re-rolled up to two times. They are then distributed among the ability cards of the individual heroes. In the so-called initiative phase, the heroes can use initiative abilities and attack the opponents in advance. To do this, they take the previously assigned dice from ability cards with initiative effects and then trigger this card.
The enemies then attack the heroes in the minion phase. The attacks of each enemy are determined by a combat card. This card has a symbol that activates an attack that is described on the enemy board. As soon as all enemies have attacked once, it is the heroes' turn again. They can now activate all of their ability cards on which they have placed dice in any order. If no side has been defeated after this, the battle continues into the next round and begins again with the dice roll.
Act finished? On to the next one!
Once the act is over, you can continue playing the game with your heroes. All skills and rewards from the fight are carried over into the next act. Here the game loop starts again. Each act starts a little differently, which means different challenges await you. The goal is to defeat the boss at the end of the third act.
If you don't want to continue playing after an act and want to take a break, that's no problem. Assault on Doomrock offers a save function that allows you to save your character between acts in order to continue the campaign at a later time.

Conclusion
Assault on Doomrock is an exciting adventure game that is bursting with charm. The illustrations and little stories that the game brings with its cards are beautifully presented and will bring a smile to your face. Assault on Doomrock is also quite convincing in terms of gameplay. Despite the instructions being far too complicated and confusing, it is easy and quick to play because the basic principle is actually simple. Go to places, make the best of them and then off into battle.
In terms of replay value, you can hardly complain. With a whopping 20 heroes, 20 characteristics, 50 areas, 30 enemies, 92 events, well over 200 different items, etc., the basic game will keep you very busy. There are also 10 expansion modules and variants that make the gameplay even more varied. But that much replay value does come at a price. The RRP for the game is a whopping 115 euros. At first glance, that seems a bit much for a large collection of cards, as other games in the same price segment boast miniatures, double-layered game boards, and much more. Nevertheless, Assault on Doomrock is definitely worth the price. Especially if you like this type of game, you can get a lot out of it.
Assault on Doomrock can be played with up to four players. Personally, I preferred playing it solo, because in my opinion it is in the top league of the best solo games. You can play it with either two heroes or with a semi-automatic companion, which allows you as the player to concentrate fully on your one hero. Both versions work well. I personally found the game with two heroes controlled by me a bit more fun, even though playing with the companion is recommended. Creating two individual heroes was a bit appealing.
In general, I would like to recommend Assault on Doomrock to all gamers who like casual adventure games, like wacky humor and want to spend endless hours playing a game that constantly presents them with new tasks. And even if it doesn't feel quite right in some places, adventure lovers and especially solo players will have a lot of fun with Assault on Doomrock.
