A few days ago we introduced you to the young publisher al-Khwarizmi Games in our inside article before. We spoke to founders and game designers Taras Tomyshch and Alex Pchelintsev about their games and future projects. They both kindly made their games available to us. In this review, we would like to introduce you to the Alex, Ave, Leo! game in more detail.

Cheers, Leo! Let's take on the role of gladiators entering an arena in search of fame and fortune. Here they not only meet competition, but also a hungry lion. Only the gladiator who handles the situation the smartest will emerge victorious from the arena.

Easily learned

Hail Leo! is a fast-paced, family-friendly tactics game for 2-6 players where the goal is to be the first to collect 7 gold. At the beginning of a round, the end of the game throws out all available dice to determine the strength of the actions for this round. Then all players in turn carry out an action by selecting the corresponding die and carrying out the action depicted on it. When the last die was taken, the next player throws all the dice again and can choose an action first.

There are three types of dice in total. Green movement dice, yellow gold dice, and a red lion die. If you choose the green movement die, you can move your gladiator in a straight line according to the result of the die. If you want to move to a space next to an opposing gladiator or the lion, you need one more step to enter that space. This is cumulative for each gladiator standing on an adjacent space. If you collect a yellow gold cube by moving, the movement ends and you receive gold. The yellow gold die is then set aside for rolling actions for the next round. The yellow gold die action is there to place them back on the board. Depending on what the die shows, the gold must be placed 1-3 spaces away from the lion. The red lion die moves the lion. This must be moved in a straight line according to the result of the dice. We can use it to snatch gold from our opponents or block the way to it.

Amazingly tactical

Because the players choose their actions from a common action pool one after the other, Ave, Leo! amazingly tactical. You can steal other players' actions or gain an advantage by cleverly placing the gold dice or the lion. The movement of his own gladiator can also be used to prevent his opponents from getting gold. Because you need more movement steps to enter an adjacent field, you can get in the way and possibly secure the gold yourself in the next turn.

Depending on what the dice shows, the actions have different strengths. You can use this to put yourself in a good position or to make it more difficult for your opponent.

However, the game requires a certain number of players. There is simply not enough going on on the game board for two and you hardly get in each other's way. There is also hardly any influencing of the other party. With four or more players, you often get in each other's way. Clearly different considerations come to light here. In the two-person game you just chase the gold.

Summary

we are honest When we Hail, Leo! When we held it in our hands for the first time, we didn't expect much. Small box, not much material, most of it dice. Our first game was then still for two. However, we already thought that the more players fighting for the gold, the interaction would increase significantly. Foursome, Ave, Leo bloomed! then really on and made us very happy. The fast 15-minute laps flew by. For such a small game, Ave, Leo! just amazing depth. Of course, luck affects the rounds a lot, but how well you use your chances is always up to you. You often ask yourself whether you should deny an opponent the chance of a dice or gold or rather play it safe and grab gold for yourself. Hail there, Leo! so easy to explain and play, it will certainly be played more often, because Ave, Leo is particularly suitable for the beginning or end of a game night! like no other game.
