Social deduction board games exist in a niche, but are extremely popular with fans of the genre. The Netflix film “The Werewolves of Mirkwood”, on the other hand, seems to be able to inspire the masses. The film has taken the top spot in the German charts.
The fantasy spectacle "Werewolves of Mirkwood" with Jean Reno in one of the roles is ultimately a typical French film: entertaining, sometimes quite strange - and in a strange way attractive. The audience obviously likes it, because the film based on a board game has made it to the top of the Netflix charts.
board game reinterpreted
The film follows the idea of the original: villagers try to unmask a werewolf who has secretly mixed in with the community. But every night there is a new victim. The villagers must protect themselves against the threat and find out as quickly as possible who in the group is up to no good. This premise has already made the social deduction board game enormously popular in a genre that is otherwise considered more of a niche.
The film was directed by François Uzan, the director of “Lupin”. The screenplay was written by Hervé Marly and Philippe des Pallières – both of whom also developed the game.
The film is certainly well received by many fans. The mixture of Jumanji, Dungeons and Dragons and French comedy hits the mark. The success can be seen in the Netflix charts, where the film jumped to first place in the last week of October.
