In the coming year, the publisher Free League will bring a tabletop RPG based on Blade Runner onto the market. The publisher recently announced the project, including the release period, and brought out an atmospheric trailer at the same time. The role-playing game is based on both the 1982 film classic Blade Runner and the sequel Blade Runner 2049.
Decades have passed since Blade Runner debuted on screen in 1982. Even today, the dark film has lost none of its appeal. The Free League publisher is now working on a tabletop RPG based on the film licenses. Free League is working with the film production company Alcon Entertainment on this. After the bestsellers and award-winning role-playing games Alien, Tales from the Loop and Forbidden Lands, the next big hit could follow with Blade Runner. In any case, the brand has potential.
Los Angeles is the star
The official Blade Runner RPG will see players take to the neon-noir streets of Los Angeles as a "Blade Runner" with a variety of special abilities, personalities - and memories. The core rulebook is set in the year 2037, so the adventure begins shortly after the Wallace Corporation rolled out the new Nexus 9 Replicants. Players thus have the choice of playing as a human or as a replicant.
"It's important for us to fully capture the Blade Runner experience and themes from all perspectives, including the city," says Game Director Hierenstam. "One of the most intriguing characterizations in Blade Runner is Los Angeles itself, and we want LA to respond differently depending on the character, specialties, and tasks." Choices should therefore have consequences for the environment.
The tabletop RPG will not be a cameo: the Blade Runner RPG and its series of future expansions are set to push the boundaries of investigative gameplay in tabletop RPGs. Joe LeFavi, who is more deeply involved in the brand, is responsible for shaping the stories: Le Favi is involved in the book "The Art and Soul of Blade Runner 2049" and - more importantly - in the video game remaster Blade Runner : Enhanced Edition. The collaboration between Genuine Entertainment and Free League had previously spawned the hit Alien RPG.
