The As d'Or, the award for France's game of the year, is traditionally awarded in Cannes. The nominated board games in the four prize categories have now been determined.
The Cannes International Games Festival is France's premier games event. The counterpart to the German game of the year awards is also presented there every year: the "As d'Or". The category prizes also go to the best – or rather: to the most convincing – board games of the current year. . The award has been presented for 15 years.
As d'Or: Jury deliberates for ten hours
The jury put 3.700 games, 2.300 hours of testing and ten hours of consultation behind them: Twelve games in the four categories of family games (general), children, connoisseurs and experts were finally named.
In the general category Family games are Akropolis by Jules Messaud, District Noir by Nao Shimamura and Nobutake Dogen and That's not a Hat by Kasper Lapp.
Among the children's games Flashback Zombie Kids by Baptiste Derrez and Marc-Antoine Doyon, La Colline aux Feux Follets by Jens-Peter Schliemann and Bernhard Weber and La Planche des Pirates by Benoit Turpin and Florian Sirieix.
It was particularly exciting because of the nominations for the Expertcategory, the prize for which is being awarded for only the second time. The nominated board games are Challengers by Johannes Krenner, Markus Slawitscheck, Alice is Missing by Spenser Stark and Turing Machine by Fabien Gridel and Yoann Levet on the list of prize-worthy titles.
Im expert segment the jury ultimately chose Arche Nova (Ark Nova) by Mathias Wigge, Carnegie by Xavier Georges and Federation by Dimitri Perrier and Matthieu Verdier. This also makes it clear: Mathias Wigge's complex zoo board game is also well received by the French neighbors.
The International Games Festival created the "As d'Or" competition in 1988 and every year awards the best games published on the French market. For comparison: the German “Spiel des Jahres” award has existed since 1978 and is therefore ten years longer.
In 2003, the French Association for the Promotion and Evaluation of Board Games created the "Game of the Year" label with very similar criteria and selection procedures. In 2005, the initiators of the As d'Or and Game of the Year decided to combine their efforts to present a single seal of quality recognized by the industry. As with the "Game of the Year" award, the award-winning board games receive significantly more attention, which results in higher sales volumes.
