The quick fights of Electronic Arts Free-2-play shooter Apex Legends could soon also be played on the home gaming table - assuming the crowdfunding campaign for the planned board game makes it successfully across the finish line.
Apex Legends - The Board Game, the sober title of the adaptation, is an idea from Glass Cannon Unplugged, i.e. the publisher who has previously implemented Frostpunk and is working on a board game for Dying Light. The Polish studio seems to be putting out feelers again for a successful title. Because: Apex Legends by Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment is a real hit. According to the developers, the team shooter reached 100 million players worldwide shortly before the release of the ninth season - sales had exceeded the one billion US dollar mark.
Skirmishes in 3D arenas
Glass Cannon Unplugged will not be able to count on such record numbers with the board game despite the gigantic player base, but the chances are high that you could cut off a decent piece of the pie. Before success, however, there is a crowdfunding campaign - and in this segment it has already torn up many other ambitious game titles.
The makers obviously want to transport the idea of the video game into the board game. Apex Legends – The Board Game is aimed at two to four players, with expansions there will probably be more. Above all, Glass Cannon Unplugged wants to bring the dynamics from the template into the board game - including the mmodifications of weapons, ammunition or other equipment.
The makers promise "endless replayability", which they want to achieve primarily through the modular structure of the game board. You will always be able to place pieces of terrain or buildings differently. The combat system should be "innovative", the opposing side should be able to be played cleverly.
So far there isn't much information, but there is some. For example, Glass Cannon Unplugged introduced the fighter "Bloodhound" in a short teaser, revealing his special skills, which revolve around mobility on the battlefield in particular.
The basic concept has been tested for a few weeks, also as part of betas. The creators let the fans experience the steps of game development. They had previously shown the idea of 3D construction for the battle arenas. They are not particularly large, but they have several levels, so that the tactical skirmishes extend over different heights.
On May 17th, Apex Legends – The Board Game will go into crowdfunding Kickstarter start. From then on it becomes clear whether the success of the template can be lived up to.
