Amazon is producing a series about Lord of the Rings, that's well known. The group is drilling a thick board that should bring the streaming segment inflows. The fantasy series based on Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" is probably one of the most anticipated streaming projects at the moment. We've summarized all the information about the Amazon series: story, cast, launch.
On January 12th, Amazon published a synopsis of their planned Lord of the Rings series. This is the first time that an official source contains information about the content of the series, which allows new conclusions to be drawn about the content and characters of the series. These are to be summarized in this article.
The Lord of the Rings series suggests epic drama
The portal "theonering.net" has now published the complete synopsis of Amazon in English:
Amazon Studios' forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien's pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.
Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.
So translated: The planned series of Amazon Studios brings the heroic legends of the legendary second age of Middle-earth to the screens for the first time. Set thousands of years before the events of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, this epic drama will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to fame and fell again. Surprising heroes tested, hope hangs by the thinnest thread and the greatest threat Tolkien ever put on paper threatens to envelop the world in darkness.
The series starts at a time of relative peace and contains an ensemble of both familiar and new characters who are confronted with the long-feared reappearance of dark forces in Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the Elven capital Lindon and the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the most remote corners of the map, these kingdoms and characters will leave a legacy that will live on long after their death.
The second age
After a first tease for the Lord of the Rings series, which appeared in the summer of 2019, gave the first indications that the plot takes place well before the events of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, Amazon provides confirmation of this with its synopsis. The first sentence makes it clear that the series takes place during the Second Age, which begins after the defeat of Morgoth in the War of Wrath in the First Age and ends after 3.441 years with the victory of the Last Alliance over Sauron. The plot of the Prime series can therefore be located at least 3.000 years before the events of the films.

This allows conclusions to be drawn about which old acquaintances we can meet in the series and which not. Because even though Bilbo proved that hobbits can still be adventurous at over 100 years old and the Dunedain people, to which Aragorn belongs, have a lifespan that is above average for humans. Is it impossible that we meet people or hobbits known from the movies. A reunion with Gimli is also out of the question, because dwarves “only” live to be around 250 years old. An appearance of the divine Istari, Gandalf, Saruman and Radagast will at least not take place on Middle-earth, since they only came to the continent in the third age to support the peoples of Middle-earth in the fight against Sauron.
The return of already known elves, however, is quite possible, because they are immortal and cannot die of old age or illness. The cast has already been announced for the ring bearer Galadriel and an appearance by Elrond von Rivendell is very likely. A comeback for Legolas is ruled out, however, as it was only born in the middle of the third age. So there is currently a lot of evidence that the ensemble of the Lord of the Rings series is composed of many new and only a few known characters.
The community of the ring
The first 15 names of the main cast have already been confirmed by Amazon Robert Aramayo (Game of Thrones), Owain Arthur (Babylon), Nazanin Boniadi (Counterpart), Tom Budge (Bloom), Morfydd Clark (His Dark Materials), Ismael Cruz Cordova (The Undoing), Ema Horvath (Don't Look Deeper), Markella Kavenagh (Romper Stomper), Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones), Tyroe Muhafidin (Treasure Maps and Tinned Spaghetti), Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards (Wanderlust), Dylan Smith ( Treadstone), Charlie Vickers (The Medici: Rulers of Florence), and Daniel Weyman (Silent Witness).
Robert Aramayo and Joseph Mawle already have experience with great fantasy epics. Both impersonated roles in HBO's hit series Game of Thrones. Aramayo played a young Eddard Stark in seasons six and seven. Mawle played the role of his brother and John Snow's uncle Benjen Stark. According to the Hollywood Reporter, he is supposed to play a villain named Oren, even if there is no character with this name in the Lord of the Rings universe.
According to Variety, Australian actress Markella Kavenagh, who has previously appeared primarily in Australian television series, will take on the role of the female lead. Details of this have been kept strictly under lock and key, so far only the name is known: Tyra. Variety News also revealed that "His Dark Materials" actress Morfydd Clark will play the role of Galadriel, who will be over 7.000 years old by the time the series begins.
Other roles confirmed by Amazon: Cynthia Addai-Robertso (Power), Maxim Baldry (Years and Years), Sir Lenny Henry (Broadchurch), Peter Mullan (Westworld), Ian Blackburn (Shelter), Kip Chapman (Top of the Lake ), Anthony Crum (The Wild), Maxine Cunliffe (Power Rangers Megaforce), Tryston Gravelle (The Terror), Thusitha Jayasundera (Broadchurch), Fabian McCallum (You, Me & The Apocalypse), Simon Merrells (Good Omens), Geoff Morrell (Top of the Lake: China Girl), Lloyd Owen (The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles), Augustus Prew (Kick-Ass 2), Alex Tarrant (Tatau), Leon Wadham (Power Rangers Beast Morphers), Benjamin Walker (Jessica Jones) and Sara Zwangobani (Home and Away).
A well-known threat
The excerpt from the synopsis "[...] the greatest threat Tolkien ever penned threatens to envelop the world in darkness" suggests that in the series we learn more of Sauron's pursuit of power during the second age.
The lost kingdom of humans "Numenor" may also play a role, as the following sentence of the synopsis at least suggests: "From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the Elven capital of Lindon and the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor [...]".
Especially since Sauron had his hands in the fall of Numenor, because he convinced the then king Numenor that humans are entitled to a place in the immortal lands, whereupon Ar Phazon tried to conquer them. As punishment, the island of Numenor was sunk in the sea by Illúvatar along with Sauron. However, Sauron's spirit survived and seeks a new form, which is seen at the beginning of The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring during the Battle of Mount Doom.
As for the films, New Zealand will provide the breathtaking backdrops for the Amazon series. Showrunners and executive producers JD Payne and Patrick McKay confirmed this in 2019. Visually, breathtaking shots of the island state await us again, which comes up with a diverse landscape consisting of glaciers, mountains, volcanoes, rough coastlines, green valleys, rainforests and steppes.
Those responsible will very likely fall back on the locations already used for the films for landmarks such as Rohan, Rivendell or the Nebelgebirge. These are probably accompanied by a very similar visual design, because as an illustrator and concept artist John Howe is working on the series, who was already working for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Unfortunately, the shooting is still delayed by the Corona crisis, which had to be interrupted again and again. Only the pilot double episode has been filmed so far. At least five seasons with eight to ten episodes each are planned. However, fans still have to be patient: An official start date for the series is not yet known. However, fans can continue to hope for the current year, because the Middle-earth epic should be seen in 2021.
