Eve Online goes offline: One of the longest-serving MMORPGs on the market is venturing into new directions. As the publisher Titan Forge announces, a board game will be released for the complex space MMO. There isn't much information, but a look at the miniatures reveals that the title will at least visually adhere closely to the video game.
Eve Online has attracted fans for many years with its mix of economic strategy and space adventure. The MMORPG is one of the oldest on the market, but the Icelandic developers CCP Games ensure that the title does not automatically become obsolete due to its long running time. Regular gameplay changes and visual improvements have made Eve Online stand the test of time – successfully. Because: Above all, the space MMO's fan base is one of the most committed ever.
Eve Online as a board game
The game has been around for just over twenty years, but CCP Games has never exploited the brand quite as much as rival studios. Although there is now a mobile offshoot and novels about the game have also been published, the Icelanders' franchise efforts have never been as comprehensive as World of Warcraft, which is roughly the same age. That is now changing surprisingly: As the publisher and miniatures specialist Titan Forge announces, Eve Online is set to make the leap to a board game.
“EVE Online: The Board Game” – the sober title of the game – is to be financed via crowdfunding. The campaign is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of the year. You can follow that Project on Kickstarter already, which around 2.000 fans are now doing.
Aside from the mere announcement of a board game for Eve Online, there is hardly any information. Titan Forge would like to make EVE Online's complex dynamics and endless expanses tangible as a tabletop game.
Players will command a fleet and attempt to expand their sphere of influence. The board game - like the original in parts - will obviously be confrontational, but there will hardly be a lack of cooperative, or seemingly cooperative, mechanics. According to Titan Forge, elements of diplomacy and deception as well as direct declarations of war are specified.
The first image of the material suggests that the makers will stick visually closely to the original. The ship miniatures correspond to the models from the video game - and the illustrations on the cards and the modular game board components also reflect the style of the template. Battles are apparently fought with dice, and the universe is likely to be composed differently with each game.
