Verlag Kosmos generates strong sales by maintaining its well-known brands, but also through innovative concepts. Both of these can be found in the innovations for 2021 from the Stuttgart publishing house: Completely new brands, but also sequels with which, not least, the aim is to open up new target groups. Fans have special expectations of the illustrator Michael Menzel, who has been secretly working on a new board game: The Adventures of Robin Hood. But that shouldn't have been it: We have summarized the board game innovations that Kosmos Verlag will be adding to its portfolio in spring 2021.

The spring innovations are numerous at Verlag Kosmos: eleven children's games are coming onto the market, the Exit brand is being expanded by six titles - and a total of nine new products for family and adult games are waiting to be launched in the young year 2021.

Most Wanted: The Adventures of Robin Hood

Robin Hood's Adventures will be released in March. Image: Cosmos

With The Adventures of Robin Hood, Kosmos Verlag publishes Michael Menzel's new work. The author of The Legends of Andor worked in secret on the family game that relies on an innovative mechanism: a changing board.

England in 1193. The county of Nottingham suffers from the yoke of the evil Prince John and his henchmen: The players slip into the roles of Robin Hood and his companions Little John, Maid Marian and Will Scarlet. Together they face injustice and uncover a dark secret in the process. They move their figures freely on the large game board, talk to villagers and explore objects. They always have to get away from the Nottingham Sheriff's henchmen. That arouses curiosity, stirs up expectations, especially against the background of the success of the Andor series. That Michael Menzel could fail with a Robin Hood adventure of all things? Hard to imagine. Especially not because the board game relies on a new kind of trick. The picture is actually played on on the lively game board. The figures move in an open game world without predetermined walking paths; the game board changes over the course of the game. An original mechanism determines the movement of the figures through the use of different wooden pieces.

The various actions and secrets are integrated into the game plan and are only revealed in the course of the story. The game board has a “memory” and remembers what the players have already explored or found
to have. Thanks to the special material, the entire game can be set up and dismantled very quickly. With the introductory game, players can start their first adventure straight away. The book included accompanies you through the story.

The crew - mission deep sea

The sequel to Die Crew will be released in March. Image: Cosmos

The crew was a hit, excellent, popular, with a classic game concept in a modern guise. It was to be assumed that a sequel would appear - and this time it will not go into the vastness of space, but into the depths of the ocean.

Once again, author Thomas Sing is responsible for the implementation. Adventure, ancient secrets, but also unknown dangers beckon in the dark of the deep sea. Players ages ten and up graduate in the sequel to the award-winning Kennerspiel des Jahres 2020 The crew perform risky tasks, perform daring missions - and also have to prove themselves as a team.

Communication is a crucial factor in this. But this is more difficult than expected on this underwater adventure. The crew plunges into unimagined depths to fulfill a mysterious mission. During the risky dives, the crew members have to rely on each other. Therefore, in the cooperative trickery game, whoever receives the most tricks does not win. Rather, it's about passing the trick on to the right crew member.

In the missions there are guidelines as to which cards a crew member must receive. Who is holding which cards in hand? One can only guess. 96 new order cards ensure highly varied missions in countless constellations. So these tasks lead the crew further and further into the depths of the ocean and they get closer and closer to the great secret.

Adventure Games - The Gloom City Files

Game designer Phil Walker-Harding had a hit with Cacao in 2015, as did Imhotep in the following year. Together with Matthew Dunstan, several story-based adventure games appeared in 20219 with the Adventure Games, the plot of which the players advance together.

Exploring places, combining objects, experiencing stories: the Adventure Games series allows players to immerse themselves in a story that they not only discover together, but also shape. Because depending on the decisions you make, the course of history changes. The special feature: The latest adventure comes from the pen of Kayleigh Anderson, freelance writer, and Hauke Gerdes, who became known among other things through the live streaming channel "Rocket Beans".

With the suspended cops pushing a quiet ball, it's quickly over when the latest case pulls players deeper and deeper into its spell. Who is behind the kidnappings? And will it be possible to free the hostages? The players investigate several suspicious locations, record clues and speak to the residents of Gloom City in order to finally get on the trail of the culprit. For this purpose, the players slip into the role of different characters with different characteristics and thus dive even deeper into the game. Joint decisions move the action forward. So it's particularly exciting: the players themselves decide how the thriller ends.

Hunter of the night

The game Hunter of the Night by Yasutaka Ikeda, which actually dates from 2010, is more of a new edition than a real novelty. Impenetrable darkness reigns in the forest of shadows. Vampires hunt werewolves and vice versa. The warring groups are powerful and are trying to exterminate each other.

The few remaining people who have got caught between the front lines sometimes fight on one side, sometimes on the other. Which group will win? Each player either belongs to the werewolves clan, to the vampires or is one of the few people.

At the beginning everyone only knows their own identity. It is therefore important to collect as much information about the other players as possible in order to gradually uncover the affiliations of the others. Only when you know who is on which side can you unite against your common enemy. To do this, the players move to different locations that allow different actions.

Catan continues to grow. The successful series is linked to the Kosmos publishing house like no other and is considered to be one of the most influential game brands of all.
