Is World of Warcraft coming to consoles after all? This question has been bothering fans for a long time and now again, because apparently a port is no longer categorically ruled out, but suddenly quite possible.
Fans around the world have been playing World of Warcraft for almost two decades - and the most popular MMO has always been a PC game. That could change in the future. Although nothing has been specifically confirmed, according to Blizzard Vice President Holly Longdale, it is no longer ruled out. Longdale answered the question from the Gameradar portal as to whether there were technical or logistical reasons that were currently preventing a port. Ultimately, the accessibility for console gamers is different.
World of Warcraft on Xbox through Microsoft deal?
Since 2004, World of Warcraft has been considered a video game with a classic PC concept. Mouse and keyboard can now be used on consoles and the technology gap between a gaming PC and the powerful console generations has become smaller and smaller. Against this background, fans have been hoping for a long time that World of Warcraft would make the leap to consoles. With the deal between Activision-Blizzard and Microsoft, the rumors are not only gaining momentum again, they could ultimately be confirmed with greater probability than ever before.
The fact that World of Warcraft no longer necessarily only has to be reserved for stationary gaming PCs was already indicated by the possibility of being able to play the MMO on the Steam Deck without any problems.
What remains unclear, however, is whether a console port is actually something the developers are actively working on. The statements from Blizzard Vice President Holly Longdale remained vague: People are talking about it and in principle a console version is possible. However, the focus is currently on the next three expansions that will be released as part of the World Souls saga. The development team is working on all three add-ons in parallel. Still, Longdale notes, “We are Microsoft now.” The console topic obviously ends up on the table automatically.
It was said that there had been no real conversation with Xbox Game Studios since the recent takeover in mid-October - neither about World of Warcraft for the Xbox nor about World of Warcraft as part of the Game Pass for PC. There are therefore no final answers that can be communicated.
At least the teams have the two anchor points for discussions in mind. In any case, Holly Longdale would think it would be “cool” if World of Warcraft could be opened up to a new audience for its 20th anniversary.
