With Baldur's Gate 3, Larian Studios has achieved a coup. The role-playing game attracts numerous fans: around 470.000 players playing at the same time were the highest number on Steam so far. And the sales figures for the early access phase are also convincing, as has now become known.
Nobody currently doubts the quality of Baldur's Gate 3: With patch 1.0, the role-playing game has had an almost perfect launch on the PC. The title was previously in early access for around three years and recently attracted 470.000 players on Steam at the same time. The exact number: 472,136. Only the long-running tactical shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is currently more popular. Baldur's Gate 3 is in second place in the ranking and beats successful titles like Dota 2, Apex Legends or PUBG: Battlegrounds.
PC release attracts thousands of fans
The success is hardly a surprise, because the role-playing game sold very well during early access, as can now be seen from information that Larian boss Swen Vincke revealed in an interview with Jason Schreiber. Accordingly, over 2,5 million copies were sold. For the development studio, this is not just a nice anecdote, but also a relevant sales figure, because it was only through success that they were able to keep the project financially viable in order to survive the long development period.

Looking back, this is particularly important because Larian Studios had to accept some setbacks, such as the closure of the office in Saint Petersburg as a result of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Added to this is the fact that CRPGs hardly had any standing in the games industry anymore. The genre has been declared dead countless times; only niche games have somehow made it onto the market, including through crowdfunding.

Then came an interim hype, supported, among other things, by AAA games like Octopath Traveler. Computer role-playing games were popular again, but still not a mass phenomenon. Baldur's Gate 3 and the positive reviews could actually change something about that.
With the early launch, Larian Studios also showed courage, but also cleverness. Because: Dem RPG-Bethesda's Starfield competitors are so ahead of themselves that they don't have to compete directly with the title. If Baldur's Gate 3 had been released as planned, it would have been the same week as Starfield.

Larian Studios will now be able to build on the good sales figures of Baldur's Gate 3 so far, because the version for Playstation 5 is yet to be released - on September 6th. Here, however, the title still has to compete directly with Starfield. It's going to be an exciting duel regarding sales on Sony's current-gen console. Xbox fans, on the other hand, could generate delayed sales. A corresponding version of Baldur's Gate 3 for Xbox Series X|S is scheduled to come onto the market in spring 2024.
