The use of video games as a template for board games has become more common in recent months. Adaptations - sometimes in the other direction - are an ongoing trend that more and more publishers are jumping on. It is not uncommon for real successful brands to serve as sources of ideas. This time it's all about a collaboration between Krafton and the Gemblo Company.
Battle Royale, Krafton, records for fan numbers - with these three key guards it is clear: it's about PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, or “PUBG: Battlegrounds” for short. The game has several entries in the Guinness Book of Records, including for the most simultaneously active gamers on Steam and the first most successful Steam game that does not come from Valve itself. Because records are patient - and sometimes strange - a multitude of awards attest to the success of PUBG: Battlegrounds. The game is being actively developed and new content for the battle royale shooter is released regularly. And now the game goes into the next round - but also at the gaming table at home.
Board game for PUBG: Battlegrounds
The premise for the board game should be clear: game fans fight in a deathmatch setting to be the last living character on the field. Incidentally, the video game found its inspiration in the classic film “Battle Royale” from the year 2000. Fans collect equipment, barricade themselves in buildings or aggressively seek combat; the longer a match lasts, the smaller the arena becomes. Inevitably, a round of PUBG: Battlegrounds is heading towards the finale. Because: Avoiding the fight becomes impossible. The game concept forces the encounter.
PUBG: Battlegrounds had an enormously strong impact on the games industry. Only the success of the game laid the foundation for the still new genre of battle royale shooters. There are now many equally successful imitators: Apex Legends, Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone. The success was also driven by streamers who are now celebrated on Twitch, YouTube and Co. An e-sports scene has developed around shooters.

Where there is light, there is also shadow. So: Where success is so great, there is also criticism. This extends to the health sector, because the influence of battle royale games as phenomena of modern pop culture is particularly great on younger gamers. Last year, a study carried out in Japan found, among other things, that among fans who regularly play online games, battle royale gameplay in particular has a statistically noticeable correlation with game addiction.
The board game for PUBG: Battlegrounds is a real way to slow down against the backdrop of the sometimes hectic video game gameplay. In May, a crowdfunding campaign on the “Wadiz” platform was only able to generate a small amount for the title, but the Gemblo Company is expected to put the board game on sale in November, although an English-language version has yet to be announced. When SPIEL takes place in Essen from October 5th to 8th, the PUBG: Battlegrounds board game will apparently also be there.
The playful concept is based on the template: players compete against other human opponents, but also against a board game AI, in order to survive on the battlefield. The strategic title is aimed at up to six players, but should also have a solo mode. An essential game element: the arena, which constantly shrinks as the game progresses.
