Asmodee has announced a new game from the publisher Repos Production in the universe of Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". The posts on Facebook and Instagram already reveal a lot about it, but there are still questions left unanswered.
Old game in a new guise?
Will The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle Earth be a new edition of the game 7 Wonders Duel with a different theme? Several clues initially lead to this conclusion. Antoine Bauza and Bruno Cathala are listed as the authors of the new game.
These are the same authors who created 7 Wonders Duel, which was also published by Repos Production. The hashtag #7WondersDuel in Asmodee's post also reveals the direct connection. However, the question remains whether new or modified game elements will be included in the new release.

A first look at pictures of the game material that are circulating on the Internet leaves room for speculation. Many familiar elements from 7 Wonders Duel can be recognized. In particular, the typical design of the cards, which is similar in all games in the 7 Wonders series, is immediately noticeable. In addition to other familiar elements, however, new things also stand out. For example, you can see a game board with locations from Tolkien's world. Lovers of the 7 Wonders series and fans of The Lord of the Rings can definitely look forward to the new release.
In addition to the discussion of the game mechanics, the graphic design should also be mentioned. To breathe life into the Duel for Middle Earth, illustrations by Vincent Dutrait are used. The graphic design of 7 Wonders Duel, on the other hand, comes from Miguel Coimbra.

It should be noted that The Lord of the Rings - Duel for Middle Earth is a board game for two people and will probably be very similar to the game 7 Wonders Duel. The hashtag #essen2024 reveals that we can expect a release at the Spiel 2024 trade fair in Essen.
