Microsoft had already been punished and suddenly there were surprises: the new Xbox Series models have actually been improved. The manufacturer has ensured greater efficiency through more modern production.
New Xbox models are coming onto the market and Microsoft is doing without a drive in at least one of them: The Series X in the color “Robot White” is “all digital”. The Redmond company has not only brought praise, because there are definitely fans who appreciate physical storage devices. So if you want a drive for the new Xbox models, you'll have to dig deeper into your pockets and buy the "Galaxy Black" edition of the console.
Improvements: “All digital” can also be worthwhile
So far, the community's discussions about the new Xbox models have revolved around one central question: Are the versions even necessary if there are no technical innovations? With the release of the consoles, that has now changed, because Microsoft has indeed made small adjustments to the Xbox Series X. A Reddit user who tested the Robot White model at a early sales launch, had already pointed out that the Series X apparently runs cooler during operation. Because technical adjustments by Microsoft were not communicated in advance, it was previously assumed that the better cooling was more likely due to the new condition - and thus the lack of dust. But apparently there is technology behind it. YouTuber Austin Evans pointed out the modifications.
Because: The two new Xbox Series X consoles use a 6 nm chip. The predecessor still used a 7 nm chip. The original version was therefore somewhat less efficient. The size adjustments in the so-called system-on-a-chip (SoC) ultimately lead to lower energy consumption while maintaining the same performance.
The new Xbox Series X without a drive only draws around 39 watts from the socket when idling; the console model with two terabytes of storage and the pretty galaxy look draws just over 50 watts. Under full load, it is 167 watts for the drive model and just under 150 watts for the white "all digital" version. So if you want to save power but have full power, the console version without a drive can actually be worthwhile.
And ultimately, the Reddit user's experiences are confirmed, because Microsoft has opted for copper cooling elements instead of a vapor chamber in the new models. The cooling unit is lighter and cheaper to manufacture and, in combination with the less energy-hungry SoC, is ultimately no louder in operation than its predecessor.
What there isn't, however, is an increase in performance. Overall, the new models are technically more efficient, but not the technological leap that some fans had hoped for. It remains to be seen how Microsoft will approach the next generation of consoles: Proven with more power or innovations? The direction does not seem to be entirely clear yet, at least it has not been officially announced yet.
