Is a Steam Deck 2 coming? According to Valve, this is not out of the question. The developers have recently even explicitly hinted at new hardware, although it does not necessarily have to be a successor to the handheld computer.
With the Steam Deck, Valve discovered the market for handheld PCs for itself and at the same time triggered a wave: Numerous other electronics manufacturers followed suit and brought out their own devices, some of which were even better than the Steam Deck itself. The original is a million-seller, even though Valve itself has not given any official figures. By the end of 2023, over three million devices are said to have been sold. With the OLED version, a completely redesigned model was also released after a relatively short time. As has now become known, Valve apparently has new plans.
New hardware for the Steam Deck
There are now manufacturers that bring new devices onto the market every month, such as Anbernic. Valve is not quite as busy: There are two basic versions, both based on the same first-gen hardware. Now the two Valve designers Jay Sha and Lawrence Yang have revealed in an interview with the Australian portal "Press Start Australia“ revealed that they are working on new hardware for future generations. The “Steam Deck 2” was not mentioned as a name, nor did the designers want to be specific, but at the same time they did not rule out that such a model could exist.

The explanation that Steam Deck is a concept that arose from experience with Steam Controller, Valve Index, Steam Link and Steam Machines is interesting. According to the two developers, what they learned was incorporated into the Steam Deck. The knowledge gained from the Steam Deck will now form the basis for future hardware. There is a lot of information, but nothing can be made public at this point. It sounds as though the Steam Deck 2 is quite realistic, but Valve may take an even bolder step and develop the original so much that a completely new device with a different focus or user experience is created. Valve would certainly be capable of doing so.
The Steam Deck is an almost perfect combination of handheld and PC, but there are also points of criticism. The noise level is particularly noticeable when the mobile gaming computer is in use. The temperature of the handheld also rises noticeably, but does not overheat. The track pads are sometimes not very precise and some popular AAA titles are not fully compatible or not compatible at all. Nevertheless, overall the Steam Deck is a fantastic device. If Valve wants to learn from the original as a basis for new hardware developments, then that is a good step. Whether and when a Steam Deck 2 will be released remains completely unclear.
