The future of the Xbox as a console does not seem particularly rosy at the moment. According to current estimates by industry experts and taking into account the latest Sony business report, the PlayStation 5 sold up to five times better than the Xbox in the first quarter
The sales figures for the Xbox continue to decline, currently at minus 31 percent, although it should be said that even the Playstation 5 sold around 29 percent less than last year and Sony is already talking about the final phase of its life cycle.
Where is Microsoft Xbox heading?
Microsoft itself does not seem to know exactly where it is headed. At least the latest reports suggest that there is no precise strategy for the future of the Xbox. For example, shortly after the takeover of Activision Blizzard, four studios were closed, including well-known names such as Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin. Tango Gameworks has produced well-known games such as the surprise hit Hi-Fi Rush, The Evil Within and Ghostwire Tokyo.
There are certainly profits made with the XBOX brand, but these come exclusively from software sales and subscriptions such as the Game Pass, although even this does not meet the company's own expectations.
So is an Xbox console still needed? This is a question that could well be asked, considering that Microsoft wants to make its own games available on as many platforms as possible in the future. Will the next "Gears of War" or the new "Halo" possibly be released for the PlayStation? There are many questions, but no concrete answers. There is no clear strategy that could strengthen confidence in the future of the Xbox.
The future will show whether Microsoft has chosen the right path and whether it will still be possible to choose an Xbox in a few years. Many fans would certainly like that. And Microsoft should not forget these fans and should not just set the highest possible profit as its sole goal.
