PlayStation 5: More revenue despite falling sales figures

With the Playstation 5, Sony has launched a successful power console. According to current figures, the device has been sold well over 60 million times.

Nintendo is not the only one that can sell consoles on a large scale, Sony is also counting the Playstation 5 as a real success: As Sony announced, the Playstation 5 has sold around 65,5 million units. The cut-off date is September 30th.

Playstation 5: Sales slump

In the last quarter alone, Sony was able to sell around 3,8 million units of the Playstation 5. That's a good figure, but the company has seen a significant drop compared to the previous year. In the same period in 2023, the number of units sold was 4,9 million. Sony has now had to accept a drop of just over a million. At least: Compared to the second quarter of the year, Sony was able to increase sales of the PS5 - previously it was only 2,4 million.

Also interesting: According to Sony, around 5 million software units were sold for the PlayStation 4 and its predecessor, the PlayStation 78 - an increase of around ten million. Fans mainly used digital downloads. Around 70 percent of all sales were made through this channel. The trend towards digital purchases is therefore continuing (plus four percent). Just over five million games come from studios owned by Sony.

Ultimately, growth among PS customers is slow, but fans are spending more per capita. The result: the drop in PS5 sales of around 27 percent is ultimately offset by a sales increase of 33 percent.
