Nintendo has revised its sales forecasts for the Nintendo Switch revised downwards significantly. However, as the company also stated, the announcement of the successor console will still be made in the current financial year.
According to internal company estimates, Nintendo wanted to ship another 31 million Nintendo Switch units by the end of the current fiscal year on March 2025, 13,5 – the Japanese console manufacturer has now had to revise this figure significantly downwards.
One million fewer deliveries are expected. Almost 146 million Switch consoles have been sold since its release in 2017, meaning the hybrid platform could soon replace the Nintendo DS in the rankings. Only the Playstation 2 would then be ahead of Nintendo's system hit in the "all-time table". At least there is good news. And it concerns the Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo Switch 2: Announcement by March 31, 2025
Nintendo's figures show a decline in the number of Switch consoles sold from April to September of almost 31 percent. Compared to the previous year, the company has therefore recorded a significant drop. In numbers: around 4,7 million units were sold in the first six months of the current financial year. Overall, however, the figures for the approximately eight-year-old platform are still good: the majority of sales were for the newer OLED version (2,5 million compared to 4,7 million last year).
In parallel with the weaker hardware sales, game sales also fell. Here too, there was a slump of 28 percent. Nintendo's analysts therefore had to send the operating result down to around 121,5 billion yen. That is over 50 percent less than the previous year.
Nintendo's net profit is around 108,7 billion yen, which is the equivalent of around 887 million euros. This is a decrease of around 60 percent compared to the previous year. For the 2024/25 fiscal year, Nintendo is ultimately predicting a total of 420 billion yen - which would ultimately be a decrease of around 38 percent compared to the previous year.
But that's no reason to panic, because the console manufacturer's successor, the Nintendo Switch 2, is already in the starting blocks. Although exact details are not yet known and there is no release date, the announcement is still expected to be made in the current fiscal year, i.e. by March 31, 2025. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed this in an online meeting on the quarterly report.
The figures can also be explained by fewer bestsellers and a lack of synergy effects. Last year, the movie The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a real draw, and Nintendo was also able to sell millions of copies of games such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder - and boost hardware sales as well. The subsequent games for in-house brands were no less enjoyable, but they sold less frequently.
This could be attributed to the approaching end of the term of the Nintendo SwitchThe company was able to significantly extend the lifespan of the platform with the OLED model and some special editions based around brands, but fans now seem to have gone into wait mode. They are exercising restraint, perhaps keeping their budget for the successor in these times of tight prices. This can now also be seen in the sales figures.
The figures regarding software sales clearly show how part of the weak sales can be explained:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 64,27 million
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 46,45 million
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 35,14 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 32,29 million
- Super Mario Odyssey – 28,50 million
- Pokémon sword and shield – 26,44 million
- Pokémon Crimson and Crimson – 25,69 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – 21,04 million
- Super Mario Party – 20,98 million
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 17,77 million
Things haven't necessarily gone badly for newer games, as can be seen from the brave adventure The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom: Around 2,6 million units of the game were sold. Paper Mario: Legend of the Aeon Gate is approaching the two million mark and Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is about on a par with the latest Zelda game. Looking ahead to the Christmas business for the Nintendo Switch this year, we're looking at Super Mario Party Jamboree and Mario & Luigi Brothership.
Shareholders were not particularly happy with the figures. Nintendo lost more than five percent on the stock market at the start of the trading day. Even the surprising announcements of the music app and the Nintendo alarm clock could not change that.
