Everyone is waiting for official information about the Nintendo Switch 2. So far, the Japanese console and game manufacturer has kept quiet. After a hack, the code name of the new console is now causing speculation.
After the Game Freak studio was hacked, a lot of information leaked out new Pokémon games to the public. Also details about Nintendo Switch 2 have been fished out – and they are quite something.
Nintendo Switch 2: A little less secret
The Nintendo Switch 2 is now at least a little less secret. The hacker attack not only requested information about the new games from the Pokémon series, but also relevant information about the Nintendo Switch 2. Specifically, the hackers apparently found out the code name of the new console: "Ounce" or "Ounces". Translated, that means ounce. And that is exactly what is fueling the speculation.
An ounce is a unit of measurement and corresponds to around 29 grams. Does the weight of the Nintendo Switch 2 actually have something to do with the choice of code name for the console successor? If so, Nintendo could possibly be referring to the fact that the Nintendo Switch 2 is particularly light and therefore particularly portable, perhaps even more portable than the Nintendo Switch. This in turn would mean that, contrary to previous expectations, the Japanese console and game manufacturer is not taking the safe route, but could dare to experiment. So far, it is assumed that the Nintendo Switch 2 could be a kind of revision of the OLED model of the Nintendo Switch - with a simple development approach: the existing as Use and improve the basisRecently there was a rumor that the new console would apparently also be compatible with the Unreal 5 Engine – this alone made people sit up and take notice, because this could open up completely new possibilities for Games with significantly better graphics, for example This would then be counteracted by the battery performance. If we stick to this argument, a much lighter Nintendo Switch 2 is actually rather unlikely. But Nintendo may have found a way to make the console even more mobile and at the same time more powerful.
Perhaps Ounce or Onces also refers to the controllers. The Joycons of the Nintendo Switch were innovative, but also problematic. Perhaps Nintendo has significantly redesigned the control units - and made them lighter? A current Joycon weighs around 50 grams.
In principle, a console that is a few ounces lighter would be conceivable, but the Nintendo Switch was already a lightweight: with the controllers attached, the newer OLED model weighs 422 grams. For comparison: the significantly more powerful Steam Deck weighs just over 600 grams.
Perhaps the Nintendo Switch 2 will be heavier rather than lighter. The extra ounces could then represent the performance achieved through the extra weight.
As long as Nintendo does not officially comment on the release or details of the Nintendo Switch 2, it remains speculative. If we assume that the console will be released in March or April 2025, Nintendo will not be able to wait much longer to make the announcement.
