The Nintendo Switch 2 is posting excellent sales figures. However, according to recent data from Japan, the new hybrid console just missed a record. A system from 2001, of all things, beat the Nintendo Switch's successor.
Much of the Nintendo Switch 2 falls into the category of "high-level nitpicking" – including the record it just missed. According to figures published by Famitsu, the hybrid console has reached a new milestone of two million units sold in Japan. This took 14 weeks after release – that's fast. Faster than the PlayStation 2, which took a week longer. And significantly faster than the Nintendo DS and Wii (18 and 19 weeks after release, respectively).

But: An old system from 2001 was still faster, relegating the Nintendo Switch 2 to second place. The Game Boy Advance reached the two million sales mark in Japan after just 13 weeks. 2.137.065 units were sold for the handheld classic after 14 weeks; Nintendo Switch 2, the number is 2.025.065. Overall, the Game Boy Advance sold just over 81 million units across all models.
At the same time, however, Nintendo is continuing the success story of the Switch line with great leaps forward. Comparing the sales figures of the Switch 2 and the original model in the 14-week period, the modernized hybrid console is clearly ahead: The Switch 1 only sold 911.776 units at the time. Nintendo Switch 2 is therefore in significantly higher demand. It seems as if Nintendo has captivated the gaming scene with the hybrid concept so much that many fans could hardly wait for the release of the new console. Until now, the hype was based on a positive feeling, but now Nintendo's progress can also be measured in numbers. The launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 is one of the most successful console releases in Japan ever.
In any case, Nintendo probably hasn't ignited the rocket yet. Should system-bestselling games like a new Zelda game, Mario Odyssey 2, or Animal Crossing be announced and eventually released, sales should pick up significantly. Nintendo has thus had an excellent start with the Switch 2, but will also demonstrate staying power with the retail product. One thing is clear: the console quickly met with acceptance in the market.
