The creators of the war board game series Undaunted and the game Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective are releasing a hybrid of a tactics game and mock detective stories with War Story: Occupied France. The project is visually enhanced by illustrations by Kwanchai Moriya.
When the two award-winning authors Dave Neale (including Consulting Detective, Unlock) and David Thompson (including Undaunted) work together on a game, basically only a good work can come out of it. The chances of a hit are good for the Osprey Games novelty War Story: Occupied France. Game fans slip into the roles of French resistance fighters during the Second World War.
Drama and espionage tactics
The authors each bring their own strengths to the mix of espionage tactics and story board game. Given the serious underlying theme, at least a good portion of drama can be expected, but the action shouldn't be neglected either, as can be seen from the rather vague information about War Story: Occupied France so far.
It is cooperative for the players. The concept relies on a gameplay mix of storytelling, i.e. a narrative experience, and tactical elements on an encounter map. In War Story: Occupied France, fans have to act as secret agents to collect information about war targets, recruit allies and organize weapons and other equipment for the resistance movement. The locations are French communities around Morette or Vaillant.
Despite plenty of secret actions, War Story: Occupied France will not be entirely without confrontations, as the various missions already dictate that. The aim is to eliminate targets or capture them.
To ensure that the implementation is visually successful, the illustrator Kwanchai Moriya was hired for the project. He is responsible for the design of the cover and the game content. A novelty for Moriya is the significantly darker style, which is better suited to a game with a world war setting than the otherwise rather colorful exaggerations of the illustrator behind board games such as Cryptid, Nunatak, Zoo Vadis or Food Chain Magnate. However, Moriya has already shown in the past with Days of Ire - Budapest 1956 that he can also visually deal with serious historical topics.
War Story: Occupied France is scheduled to launch in October 2024. Osprey Games plans to provide further details in the spring. The general public should be able to test the board game in demo rounds at SPIEL’24 in Essen.
